I'm not sure on the particulars, but Tonkin reported today that his XO at Station Coos Bay saw a message that the crew of the Jayhawk and a few of the rescued sailors had all been pulled out of the water and were OK... flown over to Dutch Harbor for medical attention.
There were still six missing from the freighter, and I'm not clear how many of those were on the Jayhawk, versus just missing from the freighter as it broke up.
Now there's a pretty good crowd of ships to pick up the op in the morning. A 378 and a bouy tender, and a Foss tug and probly lots more fishing boats and lots of aircraft.
I'm very familiar with Unalaska Island, and the passes between the islands in that area. It's just a stinking nasty place to be in the winter. The Bering side of the Aleutians is just ugly water.
Appreciate the clarification, saw an early thread on it, didn't see the updates, assumed the worst with that location this time of year. Lots of times I'm glad I'm wrong on things.
Thanks for the info!
I know, helicopters are amazing...whenever I see those Black Hawks fly over, I'm amazed. But I'd go up one in a heartbeat if they'd let me. I'd have to probably be reminded to put on my shoes!
SSQ and I watched a special on the Discovery Channel one night about the CG SAR folks in that area. What a harrowing occupation!
