Well, I guess I'm gonna commit a little blasphemy, here, but here goes...
Everyone here probably knows what I refer to, when I mention the Rankin-Bass versions of "Hobbit" and "ROTK", right?
Well, I'm of the mind that they were really good - considering that:
A.) They were made during the 70's, with the graphic artists and skills of the time; and
B.) They may have been eclipsed by the current Trilogy films, but they are EXCELLENT for introducing children to the wonder of the Tolkien mythos!
My little 7yo absolutely adores Tolkien now, because I showed him the Rankin-Bass films as an intro - and he's now a devoted fan!

My 6 yr old adores LOTR. He has them almost completely memorized, as well as the Harry Potter series. Watching HP right now on network TV. Course, I don't know *why* since we have it on DVD.
