The Hobbit Hole XVII - A new road or a secret gate...

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

A new road or a secret gate...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Good heavens!

See, this is one reason I always lock my car. There are fifteen trillion identical little red cars in the world, but my keys hopefully only unlock one of them!

I have been getting somewhere on my novel! And on yours, too, but more slowly because I can't seem to come up with many useful tips.

Heh...if I were writing for anyone but Teresa, I'd say the best advice would be to scrap it and start over...and try to make SOMETHING happen before it gets to 35k...

I'm not good at pushing characters out the door. But as I keep repeating to myself, this is good practice. ;-)

It's very good practice. You are quite good at descriptions, and the four actual characters you have are nicely filled in. Katy's family are all just placeholders, even her mom, though. But that's something I struggle with all the time. It's hard to make secondary characters matter!

The logic seems to hold together well. I can see who Patrick's mom is, but probably Teresa won't?

Hopefully she won't get it right off, anyway.

Yeah, secondary characters are tough! *sigh*

I really wish I could do her family better, especially. But without making them a lot more of the story...it's hard to do. I have far too much already that happens in the "real world" before anything really starts. Only a small fraction of it is useful story development

Heh. Way back when there was this lady that had not only the same kind/color car we did, but her keys fit the locks in our car. She was a bit puzzled to open the trunk of the car after a PeeWee football game to find it packed with football helmets. (Dad was the coach.)

When my parents first met, it turned out their keys fit one another's cars. They both had Fords from about the same time period - but totally different models.

Which doesn't really pertain to the current conversation, but Mom thought it was neat.

Actually, it's a good idea in a "fantastic world" story, to show the heroine anchored tightly to the real world. Sometimes I wonder why the characters go home, since the fantasy worlds are so much more fun. If you bring in the belonging-ness, well...

The only story I ever co-wrote I wrote with my dearest friend and we used that as a theme. So the happy ending we wanted to use - our characters reunited with their true loves - wasn't the "real" ending. We couldn't use it. They had to go home, and the true loves remained. I guess neither of us really believes that "love conquers all".

I think it would be well if you would post a pic of you in your island shirts, so Ruthy and me can let you know, if you would be under the radar in Miami.

Yes, let's!

This week, other than the finals, shouldn't be too bad. I hope. And I just finished off a chapter so I get to write another... hmm... I'm trying to write a semi-transitional chapter about the boring character of my three main characters so I'm clueless.

I take far too long to tell anything.

I dunno what I'm afraid of.

I do a lot of writing descriptive nice meals when really they SHOULD be off battling the forces of evil, so to speak...

Good evening all! Steve is off working on his final exam (take home). Once it's finished, he's done with shcool for this semester! Woohooo! He'll just have to turn it in on Tuesday, and that's it.

He's hoping to finish it tonight...I hope he does. This semester has really kicked his butt, if you'll forgive me. Been very hard on him. It's why we've kinda given up hope of him finishing by May...it's still "possible"...but he worked so hard on this one particular class that he didn't get much thesis worked on. It's looking like he'll be finished sometime this next summer. But definitely that's it. He only has one more "class" he has to take...the rest is thesis. I don't know if that makes sense...it hardly does to me, but that's my understanding.

In fact, that's what I'm currently doing, again. *sigh*

I didn't mean to! But it makes for an opening for discussion, and I guess that's OK. But they do too much discussing, too. And thinking. And eating.

The descriptive meals sound better than fighting battles.

Heh...but good literature has to have both, I'd think!
