The Hobbit Hole XVII - A new road or a secret gate...

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

A new road or a secret gate...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Ugh.

An aquaintence of mine who has a boy Matthew's age invited us over tomorrow afternoon. There's no way. Steve comes home early on Fridays and I want to be home, you know? Besides, this kid is nine years old, acts like a 3 year old and is bigger than I am. I'm not real crazy about him being around Matthew, if you want to know the truth.

Anyway, I wrote her with our regrets. Well, her baby is due next week and she almost seemed to kinda imply that I should come get this big hulking baby huey and bring him over to my house! Uh-uh. Ain't gonna happen.

Evening OT - we're having our Christmas pot luck on December 17th. The company is springing for the meat trays this time, kind of a shame, too. I had my eye on a nice deer on the Unity Village hill, on the shoulder of northbound lanes.

Actually... I think they got all the coasties out of the water today, but looks like some merchant sailors off that freighter are still missing.

Not looking good for them by now.

Hi, OB! We're goiing to some "western cuisine" place tomorrow. Then the boss is having a Christmas party on the 19th at his house.

2J... I don't know if you knew this or not, but that USCG Jayhawk that went down today is essentially a blackhawk. Same airframe, with some minor Coastie addons and mods.

Okay, what is "western cuisine"? and why do I get the image of a campfire and 'blazing saddles'?

Yes, I knew it from a book that Matthew checked out just prior to the tour we took of the ARNG unit.

Been a rough couple of weeks for the Black Hawks...my heart really broke for those guys that went down in Texas after hitting that guy wire.

I'm not sure on the particulars, but Tonkin reported today that his XO at Station Coos Bay saw a message that the crew of the Jayhawk and a few of the rescued sailors had all been pulled out of the water and were OK... flown over to Dutch Harbor for medical attention.

There were still six missing from the freighter, and I'm not clear how many of those were on the Jayhawk, versus just missing from the freighter as it broke up.

Now there's a pretty good crowd of ships to pick up the op in the morning. A 378 and a bouy tender, and a Foss tug and probly lots more fishing boats and lots of aircraft.

I'm very familiar with Unalaska Island, and the passes between the islands in that area. It's just a stinking nasty place to be in the winter. The Bering side of the Aleutians is just ugly water.

Yah... flying helicopters is a wildly improbable business. It shouldn't actually work at all, and yet it does.

There is a saying among rotorheads... that every helicopter spends its useful life searching for the scene of the crash. Eventually they all find it. :-) [/gallows humor]

Appreciate the clarification, saw an early thread on it, didn't see the updates, assumed the worst with that location this time of year. Lots of times I'm glad I'm wrong on things.

I'm home!

Went to the Irish session - playin' music at the pub. Starting to get a few "outsiders" showin' up...which is cool, if a bit intimidating.

There was a really good tenor banjo player there! I've never actually met or seen another tenor banjo player - not in a concert, even. Never. So that was vey cool.

Evening Hair. Gypsygirl got her walk downtown tonite. Thursday nite 'stores open late'. Although she enjoyed the lights, she didn't appreciate the highballing mixed freight that roared through town while we were at Station Park. The train was traveling 'a bit' in excess of the normal speed.

It's pretty rattling sitting next to one of them trains going fast!

(I get a little rattled just listening to my dad's train, when he has ALL the sound effects going. ;~D)

Thanks for the info!

I know, helicopters are amazing...whenever I see those Black Hawks fly over, I'm amazed. But I'd go up one in a heartbeat if they'd let me. I'd have to probably be reminded to put on my shoes!
