Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
A new road or a secret gate...
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

It was one of the first movies I ever bought...along with other musicals. I know people ridicule musicals, but I like 'em, and they're among the few kinds of movies that I can watch over and over and over and over...
I also have "Annie Get Your Gun", but that's because one brother gifted the family with it, and several younger siblings brought it over and "accidentally" forgot it here. They did the same with "Pajama Game" (I'm sorry if anyone likes it, but *gack*!) and "South Pacific (ditto...though that one actually has a few good songs).

"Good Morning!"
I can't believe Gene Kelly is wearing brown shoes with a gray suit.
To: RosieCotton
Does "Quadrophenia" count as a Musical? :-)

Tut, tut.
But he does wear suits! I like that about old movies. The guys always look pretty snazzy...
And color coordination doesn't matter as much when you're filming in black and white like his character was! ;-)

Gene Kelly must have been a winter...he looks good in black or white.

How about the suits in the "Fit as a Fiddle" number? ;-)

Those were worse than the suits in Guys and Dolls.

Legend has it that he did the "Singing in the Rain" number with a temp. of 104.
To: Overtaxed
Gosh! I'd never heard that! Poor guy...

And you know the scene where Cathy is dubbing Lena's voice? It's acutally the Lena actress dubbing Debbie Reynolds.
To: RosieCotton
[sigh] I am so very old.
The Who. Movie. Quadrophenia.
Actually, the movie is not high art, but the music is good. There's a particularly good scene with "Love, Reign o'er me" that is pretty much the best ever. That's still my favorite Who song.

It's the scene where Cathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds) is dubbing Lena's (Jean Hagen) dialog. Jean Hagen is actually dubbing over Debbie Reynolds.
Uh oh....Cyd Charisse just showed up.
To: Ramius
Ya know...I couldn't tell you a single song The Who ever did. Which is a shortcoming on my part, for all I know.
But age doesn't necessarily have much to do with it! These musicals are older, I'd guess!
It's kinda funny...I have major gaps in my musical knowledge when it comes to the eighties and nineties - dunno really much of anything from the late eighties and early nineties in particular - but I know a LOT of music from "before my time", especially from the early sixties on back.

yep.
It always cracks me up as he's working his way up to the Ziegfield Follies. Every single chorus line has the same choreography.
