The Hobbit Hole XVII - A new road or a secret gate...

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

A new road or a secret gate...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

When I was little, my mom read some of the "Anne of Green Gables" books to me. I've always remembered the scene where Anne and some of her friends were writing stories. Diana would just kill everyone off because she didn't know what to do with them.

What if your character starts going slightly insane? Or, um, takes up a dangerous hobby or starts cow-tipping or something?

Well...Anne of Green Gables books bring up an interesting point, though. To an extent, nothing out of the ordinary happens in those. Yes, she gets into scrapes and has problems, but they're of the everyday sort, really. And yet...they're interesting. I'd love to be able to write that way, and maybe this journal is a step in that direction.

And though it's not something that will be interesting to anyone else, it isn't really THAT boring to me, because it's a way of exploring my own thoughts and of saying and describing things in a more flowery way than I really would. It just isn't...publishable or shareable...but then, that's not really my goal, I suppose. It's just something that is always at the back of my mind, even though I don't want it to be.

Heh, like the rest of our crap is publishable?

As a writer, your first audience should be you. If other people enjoy it, good, but your writing should teach you something about yourself...

It looks like Albemarle Co went for Kerry.

Yeah, but only by about 900 votes.

That's pretty evenly split maybe...I think there might be 60 or 70 thousand in the county, maybe.

Yeah, yeah, I know...and realistically, I know it isn't...but the other stories I can at least DREAM of having published. So...even though this is easy and fairly fun, it rankles a bit.

But it's still a way of honing my skills, and therefore worth doing.

Besides, as one of my ex-taglines said..."Anything worth doing is worth doing badly." ;-)

Mmm, yes, I know what you mean on all those points. "Worth doing badly" - hear, hear.

I'm happy because I got in 500 words before work this morning, so I've got a nice head start on the day's wc. I really want to be at 10k tonight.

FYI, Got a postcard in the mail today for an art gallery showing of "The Wonderous Worlds of Tom Cross". I check his website and there is a lot of LOTR and other fantasy creations.

I probably got in 500 words today, too...but on the other story.

I really need to hide that, I think! But if it continues to be kinda slow today - I just finished two work orders that were from while I was out or continued from earlier in the week - then I may be able to get in a bit this afternoon. I need to be done by seven, though, if I'm going to go to the jam! I haven't gone in weeks, so I'd really like to...

Jam, excellent. I was thinking of doing something this weekend, but if I'm sick... How are you liking the new anime? (at risk of popcorn...)

Hey, at least you're writing something. I'm really enjoying my story right now... I'll be posting chapters 2 and 3 soon... which is good because trying to force yourself to write something dumb is no fun.

I'm only up to episode 5, and it's still rather girly, but entertaining all the same, I guess.

If I had the time, I'd love to be able to get in a good wordcount on both stories each day, but that ain't gonna happen! But on the other hand, I've found a plot device in the kid story that will advance things a little more quickly than I had anticipated, so that's good.

What sort of plot device?

Nothing spectacular. I wanted 'em to get somewhere faster, they had to get past a dragon first, and I realized...why not just have the dragon fly 'em there?

And there's a favor they can do for him in return which involves another character I wasn't sure what to do with at the end of the book, so everybody's happy.
