The Hobbit Hole XVII - A new road or a secret gate...

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

A new road or a secret gate...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Good lord, I don't know. I am a truly gifted monolinguist. Studied Greek and Latin roots in grade school... Spanish in high school and college... it has given me great facility in English but no abilities at all in any other language.

I studied Latin in 8th grade, but don't remember a thing, other than a few trite expressions "ite missa est."

I studied one year of Spanish in high school and for the most part I learned it on my own. Forgot a lot of vocabulary, though, as I no longer get to practice it. Still have no probs with verb conjugations. It's just that my memory is failing me.

OK - Where's that from?

It's Cheech and Chong. On the same album as the "Dave" skit. I found a wav file of it, but it was in a zip file and I couldn't download that at work.

Sorry. We just got back in. Evening was somewhat of what we planned. Started off in a rush because we forgot Jr. had youth choir practice. We got him there and it's okay.

Had dinner, then wife and I went to the Cheesecake Bistro. There is nothing within miles of there on South Beach.

Then went by the Great Walmart of China. Didn't do all the Thanksgiving shopping. But got a couple of things we needed for tomorrow. Wife is getting ready for class in the a.m.

Did you survive W*lm*rt, or were you forced to sacrifice a small child to the throngs of shoppers out for the perfect turkey?

A good bourbon should simply be sipped gently and slowly from a large glass. Maybe some ice to let it slowly dilute. If that's too volatile for your nose, then cut it with something fizzy and lifting, like a light soda water or sprite.

Back when I was doing convention planning we did a meeting at [shudder] the Opryland Hotel in Nashville. (It's about twice the size it was when we were there and then it had 1,800 rooms).

Anyway, I got right fond of going to "Rhett's" and ordering "Jack with a Splash."

Dangerous stuff tho.

Risus abundat et orum stultorum.

Just trying to remember some latinorum here. Don't take me seriously.

Carpe diem. Or my personal motto, carpe draconum.

I once spent an afternoon with someone trying to come up with a Latin-ish curse spell to kill... we ended up with "Mors cruciabliatus" which she said translated more or less to "die a very painful death".

Famous last words. :-)

But then again... welcome to "the hole". We're a pretty messed-up bunch around here.

1) We barely survived. Went to the urban assault Walmart. It was on the way home from the restaurant.

2) We didn't do the Thanksgiving shopping yet. Wife will finish that up tomorrow.

Oh, dear... your poor, poor wife. I went in today and I wasn't sure I was getting out.

No grocery stores until Friday. No malls after Thursday. I can still go to the B&N, but only in NinjaStealthMode.

The one where she worked won't be so bad. It's more suburban. The one we went to tonite was the "the world will end tomorrow if we don't stop at Walmart" store...

We were out of coffee.

The world won't end without caffeine. It just won't start tomorrow morning.

My plan to do all my shopping at used bookstores is being foiled by their evilly not having the Heinleins I want to get my the bothers... I might have to brave *gasp* The Mall.

I really hate crowds...
