In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
scrutinize \SKROO-tuh-nyze\ verb
1. to examine closely and minutely *
2. to make a scrutiny
*Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.
Example sentence:
Signora Bernasconi scrutinized the painting, said to be by Fra Angelico, and declared it a fake.
Did you know?
A close look at the etymology of "scrutinize" reveals that the word stems from the Latin verb "scrutari" (meaning "to search" or "to examine"), which in turn probably comes from "scruta" (meaning "trash," or more specifically "a mixture of worthwhile articles and trash"). "Scrutari" gave us the noun "scrutiny" in the 15th century, a word which originally meant "a formal vote" and then "an official examination of votes." "Scrutinize" retained reference to voting, with the meaning "to examine votes," at least into the 18th century -- and even today in Britain a "scrutineer" is a person who counts votes.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
now you need to drive over to the dang indian reservation in SD and vote out Daschle!!! ; )
i heard a guy call the rock station this AM to report a FIST FIGHT he saw break out in the polling place out at Lee HS in Springfield, VA. he said that the voter got up there after waiting an hour and fifteen minutes and when he found out he was in the wrong polling place he started cussing a blue streak, when the poll worker approached him, he DECKED the pollworker who got up and FISTICUFFS ensued. i bet you $$$$ the voter was a dem.....
South Dakota is a 2 day drive from here. I sent money. Does that count?
it'll have to do! ; ) Please God, take Daschle, and give us four more years of W. AMen.
Does Montana have early voting CJ? I just saw a thread about "same day registration" in Minnesota....... not sure how that works........
A two day drive........what, are you pushing the car? lol
I also have only gotten one call. It was yesterday and it was a recording from bubbaloon..........I felt dirty after I hung up the phone.
Is there any "special" law against decking a poll watcher? Would that be a "political party hate crime"?
i could be at the north pole in 2 days of driving i think!
Only absentee. Paper ballots marked with a crayon. Photo ID required at the polls. Just like God intended it.
BREAKING NEWS:
In Maple Heights OH, a Dem burb of Cleveland, they are checking ID's. Horray!
It's a big state east-west. Only takes 4 hours to get to Canada going north...but then there's nothing there for another 3 hours until you get to Calgary.
I think Texas just started the early voting a few years ago....... it works pretty well I think - cuts down on congestion at the polls on election day - which also gives the poll workers a little more time to be sure all is in order with id and such................
EWWWWWWWWWW!!!! He turns you on ???? ; )
JUST KIDDING.
photo ID should always be required. voting should ONLY be done on election day, that is why God invented election day! no provisional ballots, no early voting. those are tools of the fraudseekers!
I would be willing to guess that the chances of slick turning Gabby on are about the same for him turning you on........... right Gabby?
Screwteneyes? Sounds kinky. Sounds like something TeyRayZah does.
Ewwww......you've been slicked by willie......did you wash with anti-bacterial soap?.....LOL.
I forget where I heard this one, but it sums up my opinion of TerAYza to a tee: She inspires the worst impulses of the French Revolution.
I deliberately did NOT watch it. In the commercials that I have seen for it the hideous b*tch that portrays Condi was doing her female forestgump/rainman faces and it just really pissed me off. It's one thing to spoof public figures, but to ridicule them with hateful (and racist) nonsense like that is beyond the pale in my opinion. SNL ceased being funny a long long time ago.
