Word For The Day, Tuesday, November 2, 2004 - scrutinize
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary | 11/02/2004 | The Janitor

Posted on 11/02/2004 6:01:31 AM PST by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

scrutinize \SKROO-tuh-nyze\ verb

1. to examine closely and minutely *
2. to make a scrutiny

*Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.

Example sentence:
Signora Bernasconi scrutinized the painting, said to be by Fra Angelico, and declared it a fake.

Did you know?
A close look at the etymology of "scrutinize" reveals that the word stems from the Latin verb "scrutari" (meaning "to search" or "to examine"), which in turn probably comes from "scruta" (meaning "trash," or more specifically "a mixture of worthwhile articles and trash"). "Scrutari" gave us the noun "scrutiny" in the 15th century, a word which originally meant "a formal vote" and then "an official examination of votes." "Scrutinize" retained reference to voting, with the meaning "to examine votes," at least into the 18th century -- and even today in Britain a "scrutineer" is a person who counts votes.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Good Morning!

I have been reluctant to scrutinize (skr¡t´n-ìz´) the news reports this morning, as I feel that the MSM and their lickspittle acolytes are like liberal rain - intended only to suppress the vote of loyal, conscientious citizens.

Hopefully, the time of liberal reign is over, and clear skies lie ahead.

Jimmuh took his Nobel Prize,
Florida’s election to scrutinize.
And tried, with his Lefty allies,
To reinterpret “disenfranchise.”

Because it’s just not PC,
To blame a their loss on their own idiocy!

(Did someone tell Dick that it's commando Tuesday?)

Saw that this morning........

Today when I went to vote here is what thingumhub and I scrutinized about our polling place..........

My spouse and I have voted in Summit county this morning.....Republican ticket all the way and yes on Issue one allowing marriage to be between a man and a woman only......No sKerry people outside just two Bush Cheney volunteers holding up signs...I gave them the thumbs up for Bush and they both were very happy.

Lines are longer than the cookie and baked goods sellers have ever seen...so they say. Polls opened at 6:30 am and the spouse said about 100 people waiting by then. The poll was well organized although the spouse said one obnoxious woman came in asking where to vote when told to find her precinct she got nasty and said "well how do I find that out"....(doing a good imitation of an I'm gonna be disenfranchised today act.) Funny thing is the spouse got to vote before this idiot and the nasty woman was done before the spouse who saw her getting into a car with a Kerry bumpersticker......that's the extent of the idiocy at my poll today....

When I went many were nice and talkative.......somehow suspect the ones that wheren't are Kerry voters and there didn't seem to be many of them.....

So now we wait and see. Our polls close at 7:30 PM for those outside of the state who don't know.

Good luck everyone and go Freep the vote.....
