Word For The Day, Tuesday, November 2, 2004 - scrutinize
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary | 11/02/2004 | The Janitor

Posted on 11/02/2004 6:01:31 AM PST by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

scrutinize \SKROO-tuh-nyze\ verb

1. to examine closely and minutely *
2. to make a scrutiny

*Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.

Example sentence:
Signora Bernasconi scrutinized the painting, said to be by Fra Angelico, and declared it a fake.

Did you know?
A close look at the etymology of "scrutinize" reveals that the word stems from the Latin verb "scrutari" (meaning "to search" or "to examine"), which in turn probably comes from "scruta" (meaning "trash," or more specifically "a mixture of worthwhile articles and trash"). "Scrutari" gave us the noun "scrutiny" in the 15th century, a word which originally meant "a formal vote" and then "an official examination of votes." "Scrutinize" retained reference to voting, with the meaning "to examine votes," at least into the 18th century -- and even today in Britain a "scrutineer" is a person who counts votes.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Were two precinct people called out? One a Republican and one a Democrat? Otherwise, you've got another case of fraud going.

I don't think you are considering students or people working outside of their home area Slip.........my daughter would have to drive 9 hours in order to vote - and when we lived in PA my husband worked in Baltimore - only a 2 1/2 hour drive but that might have caused him to not be able to vote on election day......

I realize voter fraud can be rampant in many areas - but if they are going to cheat they will do it in one day or 10 - If an ID and a registration proof were required at all voting locations, there would be NO voting fraud - well, until the polls close and the idiot dems count the votes............ but that could be stopped too with Republican poll watchers.

Agreed! I opened my trap before my brain took over.

I have gotten tired of people say they are voting absentee because it's easier.

I love early voting. It is not necessarily "easier", because it is exactly the same process as voting on election day: You go to the correct polling location, wait in line, show your voter registration card (OR ID if you don't have your card), and sign the voter registration roll to show that you voted. Then, you receive your ballot (or your ballot code for electronic voting) and cast the ballot via the voting method in use at your polling location. Any opportunities for fraud are EXACTLY the same opportunities that exist on election day, and the safeguards against fraud are the same ones used on election day. I waited over an hour to vote early a week ago last Saturday. I was glad to get it done and not have to worry about scheduling it during my work day today (which could very well have been problematic).

Slip, Vast's description was the same for me - the hardest thing was finding a parking place - but that would have happened during early voting or if I had voted today.

We are all hoping for ways to make voting foolproof - and it is virtually impossible. If someone wants to cheat, they will find a way. We have to rely on the majority of people voting once, and in his or her own name. That is the best we can do. But just because voting has traditionally been done on one day doesn't mean it is the best way - I think more people vote if you have a longer period of time because it can be worked in to job schedules and weather problems and illnesses that could prevent you from going on one particular day.

If your State decides to only open polls on election day, then that is the view of your area and I feel that is your decision. I am glad Texas has the choice of early voting, but that is my opinion.

Afternoon, Vast-but why is it commando Tuesday? It is rather windy and chilly here to be going commando...

I just can't help but to point out the difference
Between W and Ketchup Queen's spouse-
W looks like a real CIC
While the poodle should be haunting a house

And if you scrutinize their expressions
The truth is plain to see-
W's a regular guy, but the poodle
Thinks he's better than you and me

All his concern for "the little people"
Is obviously contrived and fake
And I can easily picture the Ketchup queen
Telling her rich friends to let us eat cake

No problem voting here, walked in saw my neighbor and another friend who brought me a meal twenty years ago, when I had an infection and had just gotten out of the hospital. They work all the elections and chatted about my family -- no line, no waiting. Pays to live in a rural area. ;-)

Cast my vote for Bush/Cheney....Republican all the way, except for the Conservative Party choice for U.S. Senate -- Marilyn O'Grady. chuckie will probably win, but -- oh, well.

At a polling location with only +/- 500 voters I was #373 shortly after noon.

Took me a while to vote because they couldn't find my name on the list. A phone call to the County election office and another search through the list found me, there was a typo in my name. 2 of the poll workers were upset about the situation because they said they knew I had voted there before. And had hubby down as already having been there.

It was a little bit of a hassle, and held up the folks that came in behind me, but I am very happy they were so interested in making sure I was eligible to vote.

Afternoon, Vast-but why is it commando Tuesday?

It is commando Tuesday for this reason: When Pete Sessions sends Martin Frostinkowski's sorry liberal corrupt lying @$$ back to the private sector, and when Thune causes Dasshole and Dan Rather to both be deeply saddened, and when the networks have to admit that W has the electoral vote wrapped up, it will be easier to break into a spontaneous, wild and crazy naked celebration dance. I guess I may have to watch the returns in the bedroom so as not to alarm the kids.

Gabz and all -- please ping me to any interesting threads I shouldn't miss. I am on duty at six until 5am, and will be in and out as the pager goes. Don't want to miss a thing though. Rainy day here now.

Light rain, but steady. Hard to tell the turnout though.

Has little Tommy Dasshole EVER had a REAL (private sector) job??
What WILL he do????
(as if I give a fat rat's a$$)

Besides, I'm sure he's already stolen enough from the taxpayers that he never has to actually face a real job....

Daschle -- I just read somewhere that he didn't run for president 'cause it would be hard to explain all the millions his wife has made........figures. He will live off of the mega bucks he has been racking in for so long.

Miscreant Laura is here. I've been in a class on Guiding Conflict Resolution today. What I learned..."have you taken your meds?" and "your doctor can prescribe something to help." aren't the best approaches...or so they say!

The real reason he didn't run for President:

He couldn't see over the podium!!

Very cool.

I get to leave in 10 minutes. Time to start flushing out voters. I think the GOP has extra rain parkas.

Oh yeah...if little Tommy & Sally squabble every night over the remote, the best solution is NOT to purchase Sally her own TV. What planet are these consultants from????

The gal that called the County office about my status said there was a line prior to them being able to allow voting at 6am.
