In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
scrutinize \SKROO-tuh-nyze\ verb
1. to examine closely and minutely *
2. to make a scrutiny
*Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.
Example sentence:
Signora Bernasconi scrutinized the painting, said to be by Fra Angelico, and declared it a fake.
Did you know?
A close look at the etymology of "scrutinize" reveals that the word stems from the Latin verb "scrutari" (meaning "to search" or "to examine"), which in turn probably comes from "scruta" (meaning "trash," or more specifically "a mixture of worthwhile articles and trash"). "Scrutari" gave us the noun "scrutiny" in the 15th century, a word which originally meant "a formal vote" and then "an official examination of votes." "Scrutinize" retained reference to voting, with the meaning "to examine votes," at least into the 18th century -- and even today in Britain a "scrutineer" is a person who counts votes.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Been there done that........... last Thursday......... ;^)
LOL! Congratulations. How was your line?
GOOD WOMAN!!
Xs is more likely to see him. If I did, I think I'd be speechless.
xshub would love it!
We're going cell only here in a month or so after Christmas. I'm personally sick of all the Charity calls.
I got there at 6:15 and was 5th. Poll didn't open til 7:00.
Me bar is stocked for a celebration!
1) Workers out of the country at the time of the election;
2) Military, military and more military.
3) Folks who cannot for reasons of illness get to the polling booths, and they must have a doctor sign it.
Of course, No. 3 would be abused to the limit. Instead of 10,000 attorneys, we'd have 10,000 doctors.
You're baaaaaaaaaaaaaad!!!!
I forgot students on my list for absentee voters. But if someone goes to a four-year college in a different state, don't you think they should vote there?
not really. college is not really a residence, it is much more like a hotel stay! i suppose you could get an apartment and really settle in there but if you do, then you need to change your official residence and not vote in both places as MTV was trying to tell them to! xsniece is in school in OH, but too far to come home and vote, so she voted absentee.
Same thing happened to me in AZ.
What about medical people who have to work 12 hour shifts? We have to be there at 6:30am and don't get out until 7:30pm.
they had a sign up at my polling place saying that if you were old or disabled that they would bring you a ballot to your vehicle.
i like the sound of that. xsSIL just left for pub HQ to do her thang.
Me too.
That feeling of being a snail....crawling on the edge of a straightrazor....Crawling, slippering along the edge of a straight razor and surviving, is giving way to optimism...
:-)
Thanks for the correction.
