Question on the debates - Vanity
10/6/04 | wbill

Posted on 10/06/2004 6:33:23 AM PDT by wbill

I apologize for posting the vanity, but I've been hitting the debate threads and have not found an answer, yet.

When John Edwards talked about his father learning math from the TV, what was he talking about? I'm assuming that this would be the TV of the 60s....were there educational shows on at that time? (It's a little before my time, you see....)

The only math-type shows that I can think of are the 2+2 type shows on children's television. I would think that anyone who attended public schools, even for a year or two, in his father's time, would have a grasp of the basics. Furthermore, if the man didn't understand basic math concepts, how would learning them get him a promotion at the mill where he worked?

Or, could it be that Edwards was not entirely truthful?

How old is Edwards? His dad would have to be about 20 years older.
One would have to check into the PBS station in the area to see if math was on tv at the time.

Maybe he was watching Sesame Street. They count on there.

Seeing as how Edwards Father ran his own business I would have to guess that he is pulling a "Gore". He is telling an incredible lie with the hope the DNC willing stooges in the "news media" will make sure its never followed up on

Sesame Street first aired late 60s early 70s. I'm a child of that generation.

Bert and Ernie didn't teach me how to balance a checkbook.

On another point, I thought I heard Cheney say factcheck.com and I think it's factcheck.org. I just tried factcheck.com and up popped GeorgeSoros' website.

It's possible that he might have been tuned to one of the University-sponsored educational stations. They carried classes in most subjects. An individual registered with the college sponsoring the classes, "audited" the classes as they appeared on television, and sometimes participated in 2-way dialogue via telephone. The student then received credit for that class. It might still be being done, although I haven't seen it for a long time.

Yes, Virginia, we did have educational TV even before Sesame Srteet. It was dull/boring and just a talking head and occasionally a blackboard. One needed supreme motivation to watch for the 1/2 hr the programs usually ran.

Edwards is 51. ( Looks way younger, doesn't he? )

If we assume, using your number just as an example that Edward's Dad has to be 71, there is NO WAY he learned math from Seasame Street... ( started in '67 or '68)

the man's simply too old!

Honestly, I was thinking the same thing when Edwards talked about learning math from the TV. Edwards was born in 1953 so I imagine when he said "little boy watching his father" that we're talking circa late 50's, early 60's. Maybe PBS had some stuff on, which provided basic math, at that time -- not sure. I've done a little research on the topic but so far have come up with nothing.

VICE PRESIDENT CHENEY: Well, the reason they keep mentioning Halliburton is because they're trying to throw up a smoke screen. They know the charges are false. They know if you go, for example, to factcheck.com, an independent website sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania, you can get the specific details, with respect to Halliburton.

PBS used to be NET.
National Educational Television.
Ran stuff like "Sunrise Semester".
Covered everything from algebra to existentialist poetry.

Laura Ingraham just brought out this mistake and alerted people to the fact it's .org and not .com. The democrats have now bought .com and link you to Soros.

Thanks for the confirmation. Figured it was very late 60s, if not very early 70s.
