Actually, there's a very long history for this. Back in the Civil War a doctor noted that gut-shot men had a better chance of surviving if they'd been left out on the battlefield for a couple of days.

He discovered that blowfly maggots would hatch in the wounds and eat all of the dead and rotting flesh, leaving the living flesh alone. Then they'd turn into flies and go away.

He started treating with blowfly maggots, and his results were significantly better.

Sometimes medicine is gross. But if it's a choice between gangrene or not, I'll take the maggots.
