I haven't heard much from the media about John Kerry's huge gaffe in last night's debate when he left Poland out of the list of allies who joined the United States in the liberation of Iraq. This is an especially egregious gaffe since Kerry is touting himself as someone who can bring a "real" coalition together. President Bush picked right up on it and pointed out Kerry had left out Poland. I thought it was very reminiscent of the second Presidential debate in 1976 between Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter.

"Ford's Remarks Startle Europeans; Poles Among the Most Bemused" Washington Post, Oct. 8, 1976; A8; By Peter Osnos The media made much of the foreign policy "gaffe" President Ford committed in his second debate with Jimmy Carter. In his remarks, Ford stated that the Soviet Union was not politically dominating the countries of Eastern Europe. The media interpreted this statement as completely contrary to the accepted view, which saw the countries of Eastern Europe, especially Poland, as being well within the Soviet sphere of influence.

Will the media be as quick to point out this gaffe as another John Kerry slight of a key ally in the war on terror?

Kerry's gaffe of the night is "A Global Test." Strike 2 for saying we don't need bunker-buster bombs. Strike 3 for "Nuclear Fuel To Iran." Three Strikeeeees and Ketchup Boy's Out! BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Let's call these three the Mother Of All Gaffes.

I agree.

Bush should have stood up straight, but he won on substance.

Unfortunately, Kerry won on style. But even then Bush came off as more genuine-- by miles.

Le ZOTTE: My very IMPORTANT opinion on tonight's debate. VERY IMPORTANT BREAKING NEWS VANITY! MUST READ!

NO ONE ELSE THOUGHT OF THIS SO IT DESERVES A THREAD OF ITS OWN!

I think each and every poster on FR should post a new thread stating his opinion on the debate. This way, instead of having only a few threads with hundreds of posts each (ie, discussion threads), we will have hundreds of threads, each with two comments. One the important opinion, and two, the complaint about vanity posts.

I wish GWB would've pointed out that insulting Putin and Allawi in the debates isn't the way to build a coalition. "You don't treat people that way" would've resonated nicely, and cemented Kerry's elitism as yet another detrimental personal trait.

I didn't see Lech Walesa laughing at Ford just four years later. Did anyone else?

They both missed Spain's contributions. They played a good sized role until that devastating terrorist bombing which brought down their government.

I didn't listen to the whole debate, but one time when Bush was listing our allies, he neglected to mention Howard in Australia. He could have used the support as the Australian elections draw near.

I thought the desire to appease other countries was very evident in Kerry's points. At least we finally know what he stands for. Yes, President Bush did trip upon his words. Moses' tongue was so tied God had to appoint a speaker for him but we all know who Moses was don't we? Just because a man has stammering problems doesn't mean he isn't a great man. With George Bush you get what you see and he means what he says and we all know it. We don't have to wonder about what he'll do because he will tell us then he will do it. With Kerry it's who knows what his plans are? To run away as soon as possible and pretend we aren't being attacked? I am left with interesting questions. Why do our enemies want John Kerry to be elected instead of George Bush? Could it be because they are afraid to do mischief on George's watch? Could it be we really are safer today? Could it be the chances of being attacked by terrorist are greater if we elect Kerry? I say yes, Bush himself is a deterrent. As far as our old allies go, all they ever wanted was our food and help. They never stand by us when we need something. Our true allies are the ones who are with us now. Europeans make fun of us constantly because we are fat and according to Bill O'Reilly's show tonight they don't want our values either, just our help when they get into a hole they can't get out of. Well, then keep your lack of values and we will be America and the next time you get yourself into trouble with another Hitler why don't you call on China or Russia to help you and in the mean time, we will keep our conservative valued President. When President Bush pointed out that being popular with other nations wasn't his goal just drove home the point. Kerry, a determined social climber that has set his eyes upon the presidency, only wants to be president for the sake of being president. He's running a world wide popularity contest and President Bush is running a nation.
