I just took a walk a couple of miles out the road that leads to Pennsylvania and was stopped by three substantial landslides - trees and debris all over the road. The landscape has changed a bit. A fishermen's shack in the vicinity was picked up by the flood waters of the creek that runs through our town (which ultimately dumps into the Ohio River 7 miles west of here) and transported several hundred yards before it hit a bridge and was deposited into a horse pasture. I explored its smashed remains. Strewn about it in the field were old tackle boxes, a couple of fishing rods, glassware, broken radios, a "Best of Steely Dan" LP and a bike. I took home the bicycle, its spokes tangled with leaves and grass, in the hopes it could be cleaned up and refurbished.
Although Verizon said the telephones wouldn't be fixed until Wednesday, our service has been restored, I'm happy to say.
I am just astounded at all the damage Ivan did throughout the East. It seems like if the MSM does not have a reporter swinging and risking his life and limb, they don't cover it in depth. And Lord help us, if a hurricane is anything less than a 4, folks don't get interested, or so it seems.
It looks as though you have much to be thankful for. It's just amazing how much power there was in that storm. Did you guys get warnings like we did?

Those 'nightgowns' are the reason I wear a T shirt and flannel pants to bed. At least if there's a fire I wouldn't have to find something to wear before I fled the house!

The slight inconvenience of some water in the basement and a temporary loss of electricity and telephone was the worst of it for us, while others saw their entire homes swept downstream, businesses were destroyed, and one deaf man in the Pittsburgh area who couldn't hear his potential rescuers calling to him lost his grip on the tree to which he had been clinging and was swept away to his death.
We knew we would get a lot of rain Friday, but the intensity of it, the suddenness with which the waterways rose and the eventual depth of the water took a lot of people by surprise. Some people literally barely got to higher ground with just the clothes on their backs.

I'm getting really distressed seeing all these dresses which are supposedly 'in'. I'm thinking about shopping for an Inaugural Ball gown. I'm afraid I'm going to look very out of place with my selection.
There's "what's in" and then there's classic good taste. You can't go wrong with the latter.
And that's what I intend to do. I've been looking for a dress without having much success. I may have to find a dressmaker.
All the criticism of her new book finally seems to be getting to best-selling Bush-basher Kitty Kelley. After a Friday taping of CNBC's "Capital Report" to promote "The Family: The Real Story of the Bush Dynasty," Kelley exploded at rival George W. Bush biographer Ronald Kessler, who had gone on the show to debunk Kelley's lurid allegations of drug use at Camp David.
"Kitty was watching in the makeup room," host Alan Murray told me, "and afterward she marched down to the door of the studio and raised her voice to Ron: 'Don't tell lies about my book. You haven't even read it!' She so was angry she was shaking."
Kessler - a former Washington Post reporter whose own book, "A Matter of Character: Inside the White House of George W. Bush" is favorable to the President - told me Kelley threatened to sue him after he argued on the air that there were serious problems with Kelley's credibility and reporting methods.
"She was livid and her eyes were blazing as she said, 'You may not say anything slanderous about my book in the future! Do you understand me? I'm putting you on notice!'"
On the show, Kessler said his sources in the Secret Service and the White House servants contended that George Bush the younger didn't even smoke or drink when he visited Camp David, and that the only White House drug use was a couple of Jimmy Carter's children smoking marijuana in the late 1970s.
Kessler also derided Kelley's journalistic standards. "Her standard of proof is: Can she be successfully sued for libel? Which, in the case of a President, means you can say anything."
Kelley's publisher, Doubleday, sent a statement: "We fully support Kitty Kelley's actions in confronting Mr. Kessler in connection with his baseless and irresponsible on-air remarks about The Family. His attack was clearly another attempt to discredit Ms. Kelley and attack the messenger because he did not agree with the message." source
Re: Effin -- He struck Heinz Kerry as a “gypsy” and “a pet wolf” in need of domestication, and nesting was her forte.
Kerry himself admires his wife’s intellect and independence, he told me, and he seems to accept stoically, if not with relish, that she is “saucy.”
Relish? Sauce? Whoa, too many Heinz allusions.
Perhaps, he reflected, she tends to reject criticism imperiously “because she’s used to tremendous deference. When you have so much money, and give so much away, everyone, from governors on down, courts your approval. I think she sometimes has problems with a secondary role.”
So many words! I think the one he was looking for starts with a "B" and rhymes with rich. Here we go:
in a television interview with a Pittsburgh anchorwoman, employed the word “scumbags” to describe some of her detractors. I doubt that she knows the literal meaning of “scumbag,” but perhaps, after forty years in America, nearly thirty of them as a political wife, observing how the flaws and contradictions of a personality as complex as hers are melted down for ammunition by the other side, she should have learned it.
Trust me on this, there's nothing about Pittsburgh that reminds one of Mozambique:

This is bull, Pittsburgh began its cleanup long before Teresa came on the scene, but are we surprised that she takes credit of it:
