The Guild 9-4-2004 Convention Redux

Posted on 09/04/2004 4:32:14 AM PDT by BigWaveBetty

The 2004 Republican Convention is over but it was a good one. The GOP Convention will be the most historic political convention in our time. "A well oiled machine," is the phrase most heard the day after as delegates made their way home. Even the balloon drop went off without a hitch or foul words.

The speakers gave remarkably meaningful, important speeches to pump up our party and reminding the American public that pretending terrorism isn't a big deal doesn't make it go away. If you want a better, safer world for your children and grandchildren to grow up in, vote for our president,

George W. Bush!

Oh, and don't vote for that sitzpinkler John Kerry.

Hopefully we can coax Iowa Granny and Hillary's Lovely Legs into telling us all about their convention adventures.

.

There's always a straggler.

The text of a letter former President Carter sent to Zell Miller over the weekend ...

You seem to have forgotten that loyal Democrats elected you as mayor and as state senator. Loyal Democrats, including members of my family and me, elected you as lieutenant governor and as governor. It was a loyal Democrat, Lester Maddox, who assigned you to high positions in the state government when you were out of office. It was a loyal Democrat, Roy Barnes, who appointed you as U.S. Senator when you were out of office. By your historically unprecedented disloyalty, you have betrayed our trust.
Great Georgia Democrats who served in the past, including Walter George, Richard Russell, Herman Talmadge, and Sam Nunn disagreed strongly with the policies of Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, and me, but they remained loyal to the party in which they gained their public office. Other Democrats, because of philosophical differences or the race issue, like Bo Callaway and Strom Thurmond, at least had the decency to become Republicans.

Everyone knows that you were chosen to speak at the Republican Convention because of your being a “Democrat,” and it’s quite possible that your rabid and mean-spirited speech damaged our party and paid the Republicans some transient dividends.

Perhaps more troublesome of all is seeing you adopt an established and very effective Republican campaign technique of destroying the character of opponents by wild and false allegations. The Bush campaign’s personal attacks on the character of John McCain in South Carolina in 2000 was a vivid example. The claim that war hero Max Cleland was a disloyal American and an ally of Osama bin Laden should have given you pause, but you have joined in this ploy by your bizarre claims that another war hero, John Kerry, would not defend the security of our nation except with spitballs. (This is the same man whom you described previously as “one of this nation's authentic heroes, one of this party's best-known and greatest leaders -- and a good friend.")

I, myself, never claimed to have been a war hero, but I served in the navy from 1942 to 1953, and, as president, greatly strengthened our military forces and protected our nation and its interests in every way. I don’t believe this warrants your referring to me as a pacificist.

Zell, I have known you for forty-two years and have, in the past, respected you as a trustworthy political leader and a personal friend. But now, there are many of us loyal Democrats who feel uncomfortable in seeing that you have chosen the rich over the poor, unilateral preemptive war over a strong nation united with others for peace, lies and obfuscation over the truth, and the political technique of personal character assassination as a way to win elections or to garner a few moments of applause. These are not the characteristics of great Democrats whose legacy you and I have inherited.

Glad to hear you came through the storm unscathed. Let's hope the next one bypasses our shores entirely!

Talk here-abouts is you can breathe a little easier about Ivan.

Local forcasters seem certain he'll come into the Gulf. That puts us in the path, which, I must say, is better than his going to Florida. I would also hate to see New Orleans get hit. Over the last 20 years, N.O. has lost all---not almost all, but ALL---its beach and delta buffer between the city and the Gulf. If---when---a hurricane goes into N.O. it's going to be truly hellacious.

God bless us all.

From Kerry's campaigning yesterday:
Mr. Kerry stepped boldly into the verbal minefield early, arriving at a front-porch session with supporters in Canonsburg, Pa., near Pittsburgh. As he likes to do, he brandished a bit of local color to show he wasn't just any interloping politician blowing through town. But in so doing he seemed to forget that Republicans have been tearing him down for months as a vacillating, indecisive, finger-in-the-wind politician of the worst order.

"Everybody told me, 'God, if you're coming to Canonsburg, you've got to find time to go to Toy's, and he'll take care of you,'" Mr. Kerry said, dropping the name of a restaurant his motorcade had passed on the way in. "I understand it's my kind of place, because you don't have to - you know, when they give you the menu, I'm always struggling: Ah, what do you want?

"He just gives you what he's got, right?" Mr. Kerry added, continuing steadily off a gangplank of his own making: "And you don't have to worry, it's whatever he's cooked up that day. And I think that's the way it ought to work, for confused people like me who can't make up our minds."

LOL! I hope that was videotaped.

What is he, the cast of "Friends" or a Valley Girl? Oh my gawd!! (Or was he referring to himself as God? Perhaps I'm confused).

Gag alert from the increasingly gagworthy Cindy Adams:

WANT to know how Bill Clinton's doing? Great, that's how he's doing. Forget those carefully worded, clinically phrased statements squeezed out with eyedroppers from his medical team. This guy's doing great. William Jefferson is — to use a popular expression — something else. He has beaten so much in his life [??] that it would appear bypass heart surgery is just another thing to overcome. Monday night, same night of the day of his operation, he was already on the phone. Mind, I'm not saying the man was calling his pizza shop for a quick delivery or anything. I am just saying he was on the phone. With close associates. For a significant time.

My guess? His Chappaqua squeeze.

It's the candidate, stupid!

John Kerry is going through a staff shakeup that is a ritual of every losing campaign. In are a bunch of party veterans, most associated with Bill Clinton, and out, or demoted, are loyalists who brung him to the dance in the first place.

Only the most incompetent person on the team is secure: Kerry himself.

He should look in the mirror if he really wants to find the problem.

With only two months left in his two-year quest for the White House, Kerry has yet to settle on a coherent theme for why he wants to be President. That's no small thing - without it, he can't really make the case that voters should fire President Bush and hire him.

All he can do is hopscotch around the country, taking potshots at Bush or coming up with juvenile one-liners, such as Monday's "W stands for Wrong."

That's the kind of moment that makes Democrats long for Al Gore, that paragon of decisiveness. Gore, remember, paid a consultant $15,000 a month to tell him what to wear and how to act so he would look more like an alpha male. ...

Ooooo, I LOVE the 50's get ups, especially Kelli's pretty in pink! She's got the look down pat, including the shades.

But what's that on top of her patent leather handbag? It looks like a chihuahua head.

Here are some more...I just love the "picture hat" on Miss WV.

President Bush was back in northeast Ohio on Saturday. The pictures of him with Laura and the girls that were posted earlier on the thread looked like they were from the rally he had here. He was wonderful, as usual.

They were expecting 20,000 people and from where I was, all I could see was a sea of people. It was awesome. At one point he was talking about freedom and liberty and I swear you could hear a pin drop. Who knew 20,000 people could be absolutely still?

I have some pictures on my digital camera that I need to download. I'll come back later and try to post them. I may need help though.

Can't wait to hear more about the convention from those who were there. We were in NYC that week, too, but visiting a friend with 1 1/2 year old triplets, so I was too tired to even think about using the tickets that were offered to me.

You know, I remember wearing clothes like those young women are wearing.

Interesting that some of those outfits were so classic they'd still be good today.

Democratic Presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites), D-Mass, acknowledges the crowd after delivering a speech on Iraq (news - web sites) at the Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal in Cincinnati, Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004

WHAT CROWD? Looks like a bunch of photographers to me. I noticed they kept the camera pretty tight on Effin (and his pet flags) during the speech.

As Rush says, it was a snorer.

I'll bet it was lights out from the first word.

What is with all these odd camera angles? It's terrible. The photographer always appears that he/she is shooting from a hole in the ground.

Hoping, hoping Ivan misses the US all together!

I didn't know that New Orleans had lost all the buffer, yikes. New Orleans isn't very far from where my daughter and family moved to (about and hour and half drive north of N.O.), they just bought a house. I'd better call my daughter and tell her to prepare. I didn't think that Charley would do as much damage as it did because I thought where it hit, it would slow it down considerably more. Boy, was I wrong.

There's about 250 miles (my estimate) between Punta Gorda and Orlando. It hit PG at 145 mph, by the time it reached Orlando it was still going 100 mph. Frances was really strange, we got heavy wind and rain but it wasn't constant for but for a couple of hours. My SIL in Melbourne said it raged for 12 full hours, Melbourne is about 45-50 mins from us. She rode out the storm in the warehouse of the homeless shelter she runs. Everybody pitched in and they made it through ok.

Oh some good news,,, my granddaughter turned big number 5 yesterday! Woo hoo! For her birthday this year I sent a big box of dresses and the excited shrieking as she saw each one was really fun yet really deafening. :-) Dillard's Department Store had a killer sale and I couldn't resist. She also liked the cross pendant with sapphires and diamonds and the sapphire stud earrings (no, not real stones!)

Glad to be back and patooey on Ivan!

Awwww. That reminds me of when my now-teenaged niece had her 6th birthday. She was having a slumber party, so I went to Goodwill and bought a dozen ball gowns. They had really tacky earrings, bracelets, etc., but those little girls had more fun playing dress up!

Love all the 50's get-ups...especially the hats.
