The Hobbit Hole XV - Pass them by! Pass them by!

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Pass them by! Pass them by!

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Well, at least we are not included within the "cone of confusion."

Oh, yes, I recognize all of them. Have read them all, too, multiple times. :)

Yes, Four for Tomorrow is a collection of four of his longer short stories, including two of his best. Well worth reading!

Damnation Alley is a straight-ahead, post-apocolyptic SF story. It was originally a novella that he expanded to novel length in order to sell it as a movie. The movie was bad, but as RZ said, the royalties paid for his dream house in New Mexico, so what the hell.

Jack of Shadows is a shortish fantasy novel, set on a world of half-magic and half-technology. The title character is a thief who is one of the few people who can operate in both realms.

Eye of Cat is an SF/fantasy story that is my least favorite Zelazny book. It has an interesting premise, but the ending always leaves me confused. YMMV, however!

Hope you enjoy them!

Didn't we say that we were all gonna try and get matching henna tattoos at one of our Moots one day?... We just couldn't decide on what to get....

Yeah, but I know where I want mine...

I'm thinkin' they're all worth at least a dime apiece! So I'm happy...

I'll let you know when I get around to reading 'em!

Well, someone told me I might need a credit card to get in the door, see...

However if you don't count the impulse buy of all eight "Escaflowne" disks I stayed within budget. I just won't be buying much for the next few months.

By Crichton, yep. It's not a spectacular book by any means, but fast moving and interesting. Nothing too deep or intellectual. Brain candy. I'm enjoying it...almost done.

Just thought you'd like to know...we're gettin' frost tonight.

[shiver]

It was cool-ish here this weekend. But we ~should~ have a few weeks before we get frost.

Actually, depending on the its condition, the copy of Four for Tomorrow may be worth something; it's been long out of print, and until recently it was the only place to find one of the stories in it.

I read the book, actually enjoyed it quite a bit, agree with you about the writing quality.

Rented the movie a couple weeks ago, though, didn't think much if that at all.

Did you get any of the reddish leaved ones or were they the green ones?

The leaves were all green. The bloom we had so far was yellow with orange spots. I looked today and it looks like we have a couple more that might bloom.

It's just a battered paperback, so I doubt it's worth much!

Probably at least what I paid for it, though.

Did I mention I'm very happy about all the books I scored this weekend? ;-) I'm such a literary glutton, as I said before...just knowing I have stacks of books to read makes me feel sooo satisfied...

Dad had to go and point out that I don't have shelf space and I'll eventually have to either find a new bookshelf or find a way to get rid of some, but I'm choosing to ignore that fact for now. My livingroom is a disaster area, but I don't care!

The movie has one VEY good point, but one that doesn't matter much to the average guy, I'd hope...

That being Gerard Butler. Yum...
