Who's in Your Daughter's Dressing Room?
8-31-04 | Self

Posted on 08/31/2004 7:36:35 AM PDT by Paved Paradise

I have noticed an alarming trend - young men manning the dressing rooms at the shops where the young girls/women buy their clothing.

In two of my experiences, the dressing rooms were attended by a young MAN. One store, Delia's, is a clothing store for girls/women! Delia's dressing rooms do have doors. In the case of Hollister's, I complained to the manager on duty and he told me the dressing room is unisex and they will have a guy or gal there watching. Incidentally, their changing rooms have curtains and one can see through them somewhat - plus as anyone with experience knows, the curtains don't close perfectly. He said it doesn't matter. I told him it matters very much as men and women are wired very differently and a young man standing there would be tempted to look and engage in voyeurism.

Help! Can I complain to someone besides the management? Does anyone else out there feel the same way. I am appalled!

We're always clear to ourselves, now aren't we? I understand what you say. We disagree. Thanks for clarifying your stance.

Out of curiousity, what do you think the legitimate function of government is in a free society?

Primarily to make sure we are safe and secure (protect us from enemies foreign and domestic). I actually am much more in favor of local and state governments vs. federal government, which I think should be very minimal, but I am not very educated on this topic. As a conservative, obviously I do not believe in big government; however, because I also believe people are sinners and selfish, I am in favor of restrictions of certain things. I just like to see things more at the local level. For example, I do not believe smoking should be allowed in any public places. To give you an example of how laws can protect people, right now I'm having a problem with my neighbor who chooses to blow off a cannon at his whim (sounds like dynamite) but there are no laws in my state, nor in my township (townships are very, very limited) to protect me from this. The only protection I have is if the cannon is using a certain kind of ammunition; otherwise I have to suffer. After spending 3 years building our home and pouring every ounce of our energy and soul into this place, it is not very comforting to know that my only option is moving. Moreover, what prospective buyers will buy my home when he hears the cannon go off? I guess to sum up my feelings about government, it's like this: I think all people are basically selfish and that they will approve/disapprove of government's role based upon their own needs/wants.

Precisely what I said. As long as you define "enemies" as those who violate our rights. That is the definition correct?

This doesn't answer the question at all. The only feelings I want is the one where you explain what you think the proper role of government is in a free society. What Precisely is the role? I have stated mine quite concisely.

Define "public" place.

Not so. The courts offer you a place to have government defend your rights, property rights and your personal right to not have loud unusal noises destroy your peace. The fact that you don't understand your possible remedies doesn't mean they do not exist. Consult a lawyer, AFTER you have talked to the police and government officals. You have done that,,,,right?

I sure have! I have talked to the police and even the ATF!! I have complained to the trustees in my township. I am telling you there is no recourse. I guess I could sue him in a civil case for some kind of harm but my husband isn't game for that. I wouldn't have mentioned it otherwise. Thanks for the concern.

Oh, incidentally, I wrote a letter to our newspaper's fashion editor and she said she is very interested in doing a story on the dressing room situation. She will call me next week when she comes back from the big fashion brouhaha in NYC. Thought I'd let ya know!

I find it interesting that you say men and women are wired differently therefore men might want to take a peek. I have absolutly, more than once had women go into the mens restroom because there is a long line at the womens. Men would not do that but the women I have seen do this have gotten offended when I told them to get the hell out.

Thank you. I have already been witness to some of them. And I know this is just the tip of the iceberg. :)

I don't understand what the problem is. The dressing rooms have doors or curtains and I'm assuming all that these guys do is tell the women what dressing rooms are available.

Am I missing something here?

This is the type of topic that is a bit complicated to do in an e-mail format (IMHO). I can't possibly type everything I am thinking or believing without going into some type of dissertation here. I just don't have the time. As for enemies, I'm thinking more along the lines of national security - security of our borders, infrastructure, etc. Not that everyone who disagrees with my beliefs is an enemy. And, now, my dear sir, I have to tell you that you are wearing me out. Let's just be happy that we probably on the important things agree. Like Hank Hanagraff always says, we can differ on the small points of doctrine, but as long as we agree on the main points, we should not quibble.

With all due respect, and recognising that you have exchanged in good faith, we do not agree on the important things.

I don't expect you to, nor did I ask you to, tell me everything you are thinking or believing. If you can not articulate in one or two sentences what you believe the proper role of government is in a free society, you have probably never given it much thought. It doesn't make you unusal.

I'm sorry I wore you out, but I guess these kind of direct questions are very tiring if you aren't prepared for them.

Your position on smoking is one example. When you start to think about all the issues involved in that one position, it can be tiring. Even defining a "public" place seemed too much, but I understand. It is, of course, essential to understanding exactly where you ACTUALLY stand on the issue.

Freedom is difficult, in order to be free, you need to allow others to be free also. It's proved too difficult for every group in history, (including this country) so that might be some comfort for you.

I'm sure I'd be better if I was at work. You're right, maybe I'd better learn to articulate about some of these things better. While you may be correct on this matter, I think you could learn a thing or two about how to be a little more charitable. Oh, lastly, I find it interesting that you use the byline of a Sophist, yet apparently consider yourself a Christian.

I don't just concider myself a Christian, I am a Christian as I understand the designation. I hope and pray Jesus conciders me one.

And you are confusing straight talk with charity. I have not insulted anyone, nor have I sugar coated anything.

It's a forum for political discussion. I have been polite. We disagree on things.

It has been difficult to discover just where you stand on things,,,,for both of us.

You are right but the fundamental difference between this and the dressing room scenario is that the women going into the men's restroom are not going in there to sneak a peak. I guess my mom's old saying about "desperate people do desperate things" would apply here. Anyway, good point. They always make two few ladies' rooms!

What I really want to know is just how big IS your tent? And how many clowns, other than yourself, are in there? All kidding aside, I will take this as a good opportunity to get myself up to speed on how to articulate my political beliefs better. I focus a lot more on Jesus than politics.

God bless.
