I can see how the current would carry over wet ground, but what shocks me is that it would be strong enough to kill 6 horses outright.

If the horses were shod, could the current have 'found' the metal and traveled up that way?

That the horses were shod definately gave them a good connection to the ground. I just don't know why there was that much current in the ground.
