Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Hill and water under sky

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

"Heh...our church is gonna do a LOTR marathon"

Vey cool! It's good you saw the movies before so you can figure out what's going on :)

Heh, LotR marathon is great! And you better not be thinking you don't qualify as a young adult...

Well...seems like lately the trend is to use that term for highschoolers. However, I was actually referring to people quite a bit older than me. There were plenty of couples with kids almost my age who I saw at all those movies. I wouldn't be surprised if some of them crashed the party. ;-) I hope so! The more the merrier.

That's a very hobbitish sentiment!

I think I'm going to run - or rather, drive - to the B&N for a while. I need to recharge with books...

I've been to churches where the Bible translation was modern language (NIV) but the songs were still in archaic English. I guess I prefer the songs to sound KJV-ish, but with Scripture reading I don't mind it being modern as long as it's a strict translation and not a loose one.

Wish I had the handout still, because I am not talking about NIV-English, where they just ditch the "thees" and "thous". I'm not talking slang, either, just a highly conversational-sounding text. I had trouble getting through it because it just didn't sound like Scripture, somehow. It's the difference between "I will not fear" and "I don't need to be scared". Do you understand what I'm getting at? Both are understandable, modern English, but one is much looser.

Hey all, I have a question:

Has anyone on here used any PC demos of the LOTR games? I am going to check out the free demo of EA Games ROTK and wanted to know what anyone thought.

Use fr mail for replies if you like.

Thanks.

(HOTD, do you have a ping list?)

I THINK some of these folks had one or the other of the games.

I have a sense of what you mean, though I'm sure the handout would give me a better idea. From the example you use I'm inferring what you're describing is less literary than "Biblical" English in such ways as the use of less sophisticated vocabulary and more frequent contractions.

BTW are you familiar with the Living Bible? That's the first thing I usually think of when I think of loose translations. It's not the same as what you're describing but discussing this made me think of that.

It wasn't that, it was accurate enough, just not very scriptural-sounding language.

By the way, that site sounds a bit like a Chick-tract screed, though I only read a bit... my eyes are still recovering from yesterday's subtitle-fest...

I just ran out to the video place. Rented X-Men, which I STILL haven't seen...bothers saw it long ago and had no interest in rewatching.

Gonna start it in a few minutes, after I fold yet another basket of laundry...

"It wasn't that, it was accurate enough, just not very scriptural-sounding language."

I follow.

"Chick-tract screed"--LOL!--speaking of things that leave the eyes in need of recovery. . .I don't know anything about that site, I just Googled it up while searching for "Living Bible".

BTW I meant to ask, how was the B&N trip? I'm preparing for my comic-book trip here--need to get my shopping list together. I'll be looking for "Kenshin" manga among other things.

"X-Men"--there's an idea! Think I'll put mine on, too.

Ha, X-Men, good. Hope you enjoy it... Hugh Jackman's very nice to look at, you know.

About dinnertime here. I'm making a curry, beef this time. Got a very good deal on beef last weekend so I've had several nice meals this week.

Seems like I remember you making a curry just the other day. Is that your new apartment-living staple diet? :)

I had honey-roasted pork with corn on the cob, scalloped potatoes, and beets. Now I've got "X-Men" in. I really liked the first movie. The second one disappointed me a bit because they changed some stuff from the original Dark Phoenix saga, though it was still good enough I liked it. I just hope the third one sticks closer to the original.

BTW my brother was just mentioning to me on the phone that a trailer for the new "Batman" is out.

Yeah, I like to eat the same three dishes over and over and over again. It's easy to get the stuff for curry and stir-fry and just alternate that, with maybe the occasional grilled chicken breast for variety. Saves thinking, and cuts shopping time in half.

Batman... yawn... don't think I'll see that. I'm not really that "into" superhero movies, I guess.... Spidey and X-Men, sure, but X-Men's mostly 'cuz of Wolverine. Since I don't know the stories, I don't care how badly they screw things up as long as they make an enjoyable movie...

Was thinkin' about what you said re anime genres... one of the anime they showed at the club yesterday, "Spiral", is more suspense than anything though there's an SF theme, I guess. "Vampire Princess Miyu" is horror; and I've seen a couple short high-school dramas that are just normal. "Kare Kano" is the best example of that though I hate that anime/manga. Or you've got the harem-show, like "Love Hina", that's not realistic but isn't usually fantasy or SF - "Tenchi Muyo" is a harem-show-in-space, so that's different.

Good luck finding the Kenshin-manga. Pick up the first volume of Fruits Basket, too, it'll give you a good idea of the difference between shonen and shoujo, with the best of each genre.

Stir fry's handy for eating well on a budget. I usually like mine with rice but I don't know if you can do that on Atkins.

Most superhero movies haven't lived up to the comic versions. "Spider-Man" and the first "X-Men" came closest IMO, and "Smallville" on TV is also well-done. The first in the most recent "Batman" series had potential but fell short due to some flaws, I thought; the rest went downhill from there. I hope the new one gets it right because Batman is a great character with some classic stories.

On anime genres, when you mention "Spiral" having an SF theme, it seems to me that what I said also applies in a way to SF, in that SF also seems to be more "mainstream" in Japanese fiction rather than being a "genre" like it is here. Horror anime sounds like an interesting concept--the only vampire anime I've seen is "Vampire Hunter D" but that was sort of more SF/action than horror. I don't know anything about "Kare Kano" or harem-shows--what's that?

I've added "Fruits Basket" to the list! This will be a fun comic-store trip :) I'm also hoping to re-acquire some Spider-Mans I used to have that I sold off to pay for rent as an undergrad (mistake!!!). Then I'm looking for some Batmans, JLA, FF, Conan. . .hmmm, I think I'd better be careful how much money I take along, especially considering that I'll probably swing by Barnes & Noble, too. . .I haven't been to a bookstore in months and I have a craving! :)

Harem shows = series with a male lead and fifty thousand female roles, most of whom are scantily clad. There's always a main love interest for the hero, but their romance is continually interrupted by circumstances that usually involve crashing the ladies' bath, being seen talking to a different girl, etcetera. "Love Hina" is the classic example.

"Kare Kano", or "His and Her Circumstances", is a high-school romance comedy-drama. I hate it, but it's quite popular. It just doesn't appeal to me... a good anime needs some explosions or mecha or space ships or sword-fights.

There are also "sports" anime/manga, about every sport from basketball to Go (no kidding, it's a popular series right now. Imagine a show about chess nerds. Only less exciting.), tons of romance-type stories (see above; Marmalade Boy, Imadoki are non-harem versions), "magical girl" stories (Wedding Peach) Dragonball-knockoffs, Gundam-derivatives, spy/detective/crime series (Lupin the Third springs to mind, along with Great Detective Conan)... spend some time in the manga section at B&N, you'll be surprised.

Harem shows sound like the romantic/risque part of "Ranma" taken to the nth level. I don't know if I'd like "Kare Kano" or not--I tend to prefer fights/explosions but I like some romantic comedy-dramas. I think I've seen some basketball manga. Out of the various genres you mention I think the spy/detective one sounds most interesting to me. Unfortunately the B&N in Green Bay is small so they don't have a manga section. Whatever I find will have to be from either the comic store or online.

As I'm watching "X-Men" here I'm thinking what a good actor Ian McKellen is that he can play both Gandalf and Magneto that well. They really did a good job of casting this movie with a lot of the roles--Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman, etc.

Hey! That picture made me spit lemonade at my computer!

It's not my fault, I'm bored and don't have anyone to talk to.
