The Hobbit Hole XIV - Hill and Water Under Sky

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Hill and water under sky

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Good morning!

You took me seriesly! :) But OK--

I view the Star Destroyer as having the mass and maneuver characteristics of a Borg Cube, and therefore the dynamic of the battle would resemble that between the Cube and several starships including Enterprise at the beginning of "First Contact". The large number of turret-mounted particle-beam weapon on the SD might provide an initial advantage, but if the shields could be disabled (by destroying the exposed shield generator) the turrets could be shot off.

If Easy Company were dug in on Balaclava Heights, the battle would have gone no better for the Light Brigade, IMHO. The rapid-fire, highly accurate weapons of the WW2 era would have made up for the smaller force.

I agree with you re the Romans and Greeks.

As for the sea battle, what would you make of the advantage in speed and maneuver provided by the steam engines? Would Captain Aubrey's "weather gage" be rendered irrelevant? Were any Spanish guns of 1588 capable of penetrating either the armor or the water (if aiming below the waterline)? I don't know.

This is what that was that my mother bought. It really does what it says. 'Tis an odd sensation to say the least.

Ting Ting Tingler Motorized Head and Scalp Massager gently stimulates millions of nerve endings on the scalp, as well as acupressure points that create a feeling of pleasant giggly goose-bumpy sensation. It is also great for other joints in your body where it will stimulate blood flow to ease pain and create relaxation. Ting Ting Tingler Head Massager (Biju BJ3000) is an octopus-shaped motorized head massager made mainly with pure copper.

Be sure to tell JimRob some of the stories behind the knives. They've been sent to troops in Iraq, Afghanistan, Djibouti, and a couple of places that can't be mentioned. Been given to everyone from PFC to colonel, and all the armed forces except Coast Guard. And that's because we haven't had any requests from any of them.

I wish I had the time to go back into the archives and find the date when this project was first announed.

I'm sure our resident archivist could find it!

Good morning.... I am taking some of the feedback emails with us that talk about where the knives are, and there is a good cross-section.

Morning ALL:

Hair; have a great "moot" with JR. I'm sure he'll appreciate your HH knife.

300 WM: No Coasties?

OT: Kinda looks like a 'soup day' out there, but it's supposed to warm up.

Good morning! Represent the Hobbit Hole well today!

Getting ready for church here. It's seriously weird not to have to leave an hour before the service.

First mention I could find is here.

First knife picture is here. Testing the engraving, here. First successful engraving, here. The first batch of knives are ready here. Project nearly "done" here.

Found lots of "chatter" by various folks in between those posts, but those were the milestones I think!

Well..."soupy" is great for curling up with a good book (and a cat.) And there's a race today.

I just read that. I'm amazed, now, that I thought those 20 knives were the start and finish of the project.

But maybe that was a good thing. If I knew then that exactly one year later we'd be at 300 knives and counting, I'd never have taken that first step. Maybe that's how God encourages faint hearts, by not letting us see too far down the road.

You need to start charging for these free gigs!

Nah, these are just open mic gigs, and they're good exposure. Better bands than we are play for 'em, just as a way of expanding their fan base. But it's true we also don't want to get a name as a band that'll play anywhere for free. That's a dangerous reputation!

Ugh...here it is noon, I've been up for hours, and I'm still not awake. Drinking coffee in hopes of remedying that, but I'm just NOT with it today.
