The Hobbit Hole XIV - Hill and Water Under Sky

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Hill and water under sky

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

As far as mountain towns go, try to get up to the Aspen area and Maroon Bells (they're a mountain, if that makes sense). *breathtaking*

Mmmmm.... Maroon Bells ~sigh~

and I've always found that even music I wouldn't choose to listen to is a lot of fun "in person".

I agree! And while I actually *do* love this kind of music it isn't only music. They have an entertaining show, telling goofy stories and talking. It makes for a friendly atmosphere!

Now that I've gotten into snowshoeing...I'm actually kinda looking forward to winter. Sick, isn't it?

the Flying W Ranch

Hey, Welcome back after a rough summer! BTW, I have been to the Flying W Ranch. It was back in the spring of '87. We also went to the Peak, the AF Academy, and competed in a band contest (between our band and the one from DeSoto, Texas bands took home all the top scores). Took home a couple of nice trophies.

I remember Vern!

Isn't he a peach?!?!?! And his wife is just as darlin' as he is. I don't know if you know of "The Castle" up in Manitou Springs, but Kathy is one of the volunteers who keeps that old historic place going. She does the baking for the place! Lots of goodies. :-)

Now, ya'll got me lonesome for 'em. :-) Might be where I need to go for Thanksgivin'!

If I can do this right, here is Vern singin'.

I have all their CD's except the last 2. I actually had them with me at Entmoot because I was wanting to see what Rosie thought of 'em. But, I never got 'em out. I figured nobody really wanted to listen to my hometown boys! Now, I know who does. :-)

Snowshoeing? Hmm I will give you the benefit of the doubt on the entertainment value of that. I do hope we get plenty of snow so I can break out my sled this year. That is the only winter sport gear I have. My bike and my kayak are just not that much fun in the winter :P I don't have the cash to get into snowmobiling which is the big winter activity around here. Maybe I should get some ice skates or something.

Hi! Will freepmail you the address. Just whenever you get the chance you can send them. Even though I'm asking 2J to take over the work, I am still going to be picking up those magazines every couple of weeks and will be sending out those too.

If you like hiking, you would like snowshoeing. We made trails all around through the woods by my Dad's house - just wandering around out there in the woods, seeing animal tracks (and animals, for that matter) and being able to get out and about was great.

Snowmobiling is the big thing here, too. All the guys I work with are wayyyyyy into it. Personally...I'm not that big on machinery, PLUS I'm broke...

I go for machinery, but I have not the cash for it or the space to store one. I do love hiking but there really it not much in the way of entertaining places to hike in Iowa. It is to darn flat and boring. I did some cool hikes out west this year but I stick to biking around home. Compared to that I think snowshoeing would seem slower and colder across the same ground that is already familiar. With a good place to do it it might be fun but around here I am not sure there is one. Maybe I can look around and find one though. I could use places to hike anyway if there are some around here... I guess I could always take up winter geocaching.

I don't know if you know of "The Castle" up in Manitou Springs...

IIRC we had dinner there one night.

heh heh heh... Then if you had dessert, it is possible that you had one made by my friend Kathy. The castle is run and maintained by the Manitou Springs historical group. Kathy is on that board and does a lot to maintain all the historic sights in Manitou. Especially the Castle. She was born in Manitou and her parents have a ranch up there. She's like Hair, she's got horses. She ain't ever convinced me to go play with her horses like I did with Hair's though. She is another one of my friends who was a little surprised to see those pics! :-)

Hmmm... did I say that Vern is the president if the Tourist Board of Colorado Springs? He's lookin' for me a job up there. I am pretty sure I'm gonna move soon and am looking toward the Springs as one of my 3 top choices.

That's what I loved about convention planning. Got to get out and to all kinds of fun places and meet all kinds of great people. Miss doin' that.

I'm trying to remember why we were there. I think it was a dinner for the Board of Directors. I'm sure there was dessert involved.

I can sure see what you mean. Vern is a dear friend, an upstanding outspoken American patriot and a true Christian. Folks of his caliber just ain't out and around everywhere - dwarf company excepted of course. :-)
