Good morning, all. Great weekend here - I was able to see the President on Saturday when he came through Ohio. He was actually within miles of where I live on Friday night at a private dinner in the home of a heavy hitting donor - but alas, I was not invited - go figure.
I'm no good at guessing how many people were in the Canton Civic Center, but the place was packed. The President arrived almost an hour and a half late - he reportedly made many stops en route - but the crowd was loud and enthusiastic while we waited. When the President was finally announced, the place went crazy.
When it finally settled down - and it took a while - Sen. Voinovich introduced him for way too long - I think he was getting heckled at the end because he just would not shut up. Bush's speech was good and he worked it but, IMHO, it needs a little reworking. Nonetheless it was a terrific morning.
The space looked like it was set up "in the round" but there was a podium, so the people behind him could only see his face by watching the big screen. Right after he started he made a joke about the people behind him having the best seats in the house. Every once in a while he would turn around and they went nuts. He seemed to be having a good time.
We had tickets on the floor and had gotten there early enough to claim space by the barrier along where he entered and exited. My daughter was one person away from shaking his hand, but the guy next to her and others around her were holding out signs for him to autograph even though SS had come by before and said no to autographs. When they saw all the signs being held out they steered him away to people on the other side. No worries - chances are good that he'll be back.
One last funny story - I got tickets for my brother and his kids (2 and 4 years old). They got there just as the doors were closed and we managed to find each other in the huge crowd. Needless to say the kids got cranky and he couldn't stay to see Bush. Security let him out of the building, but he had to walk all the way around to get to where he had parked his car. As he was walking some protestor across the street yelled something at him - he can't remember what because he was juggling the 2 year-old, diaper bag and trying to keep tabs on the 4 year-old. Before he could react, my nephew (2 year-old) yells, "NOOOOO!" right back at the guy. Protestor dude was shocked and my brother looked back at him and just said, "HA!" and they went on their way without further interuption.
And all the alphabet networks actually cut into their programming to carry the president's press conference---wonders never cease.

Read somewhere (here) last week that she and her mother were headed to a spa. And someone speculated that meant "nip and tuck".
Well one always likes to look good for dear old mom.
T. stopped by to say that his cousin is married to (an Ohio County official) who was contacted about possibility that W might stop at Cabela's. (This county official) was assigned task of clearing I-70 of any loitering Democrats and opening the as-yet-unopened "exit" from I-70 to Cabela's. W arrived. T's cousin and daughter were the 3rd and 4th persons W greeted upon his arrival at the store. W autographed the daughter's cast (on broken arm). Cousin reported to T. and entire family that W was unbelievably warm and genuinely friendly, approachable. Cousin was so "blown away" by W's presence that she reached out and patted him on the chest (!) and said, "thank you so much for coming to WV." [Later, she realized she might've gotten shot by secret svc!] W said to her, "I want to thank YOU for coming out to support us."
BTW, my TV news videographer brother told me today that he covered the Kerry rally in Greensburg, Pa. Saturday for the FOX affiliate in Pittsburgh. A man of few words, he just shook his head and groaned.
And did Chels get canned from her job? She seems to be "vacationing" a lot these days and now she is off to the Vineyard for August? Mercy, mercy...

As for Chelz - does anyone here believe she actually has to work for that $120K salary? My question: is she supporting her live-in, Ian, or does he just draw from his trust fund?
Some Freepers were thinking of counter-protesting the protestors in Canton, but I don't know if they did or not. I was too tired to look by the time we got out of there.
Not too long ago, Kerry was in Cleveland and some Freepers went down. I couldn't get out of work in time. I guess there were more Kerry protestors than there were supporters.
On Saturday, right after W passed us and moved to the other barrier, he pick up a cute little boy - probably about a year, year and a half. As W was holding him the little boy started to clap. It was the cutest thing. I haven't looked yet for a picture, but it was a great photo op.
Some of the people from my county were supposed to go to Canbridge, too, but by the time we got out, the Cambridge facility was already closed so they couldn't go. Oh, well. I guess we can't be greedy.
M-isn't it ironic that, even though the Clintons are very wealthy now-and Slick Willie brags about how rich he is, they still have to vacation in borrowed homes.

New Yorkers forged on in the face of the latest Al Qaeda terror threat yesterday as the First Lady and her daughters made a morale-boosting mission to the jittery city.
"I want to thank people for coming to work," Laura Bush told a cheering crowd at the Citigroup Center in midtown, one of the financial centers in the terrorists' cross hairs.
While Gov. Pataki bought coffee, Bush and First Twins Jenna and Barbara - along with Mayor Bloomberg - mingled with workers and ignored a John Kerry supporter shouting, "Kerry! Kerry!"
"I just thought that [Laura Bush] was so gracious and she seemed very appreciative," said Citigroup banker Peter Manzi. "I am very surprised that [the twins] took time away from their other job, from dad's campaign, to come to New York."

Just because Teresa Heinz Kerry is a billionaire doesn't mean that she doesn't pinch pennies.
I hear that folks at George's Salon in Washington's Four Season Hotel - where Democratic nominee Sen. John Kerry's wife gets her nails done - are complaining that the Heinz Ketchup heiress wants the manicurist to service her at home, a few blocks from the luxury hotel in Georgetown, but is balking at the $90 charge.
Last week, a Lowdown spy overheard a George's manicurist say that Heinz Kerry has been haggling over the fee for her home manicures - three times the $30 it costs in the salon.
I'm told that the manicurist quoted Heinz Kerry as insisting that the salon should give her a break because she's a prestigious client and George's is lucky to have her.
When Lowdown dialed George's yesterday, an unidentified woman answered the phone and confirmed that Heinz Kerry is a client, but said her manicurist wasn't available.
In another phone call, a salon employee who identified himself only as "Rick" told Lowdown, "We don't talk about our clients," and suggested speaking to owner Denise Kazic. After Kazic didn't return a call, Rick announced that Kazic wasn't going to field any questions about Heinz Kerry or anything else.
Heinz Kerry's campaign spokeswoman, Marla Romash, denied Lowdown's account of alleged nickle-and-diming.
"It's not true," Romash said. "She has used a manicurist from that salon for a number of years. It is a good relationship that has extended over many years. A lot of women have their nails done at home. The fact that they've worked together for a long time indicates that there's a good relationship there.
"But anything else you're hearing is not true," Romash said. "I suggest you get a better nail file before you file."
Huh?
"That," Romash explained, "was a bad joke."

In a surprisingly dismissive article, Ron Fournier (AP) compares Kerry to Nixon. Fournier is considered by many to be the most influential political analysit in today's media. His assessment of Kerry's plan to bring allies on board is particularly harsh.
