Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Tree and flower and leaf and grass

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

And wasn't Mackenzie Phillips the kid in that movie?

Ugh, yes. Horrible stuff.

It's been 20 years. But I remember enjoying them. Probably a lot of that was that I didn't know what else was out there...

Yes, Elric is a cool name, and the character *looks* cool, he's just very unlikeable.

How much of the Thomas Covenant series did you read? The first time I read it, I quit about 50 pages in. Then my friend convinced me to read the rest and the later parts of the series had some good stuff. I liked the Ravers and the monk martial artists.

Worst fantasy ever? Hmmm--I have to think about that. Offhand I'd say "Willow", and if we don't count "Willow" because it's a movie, my next thought is "Sword of Shannara". But that's just off the top of my head--there must be worse stuff out there. . .

Hey, I didn't realize that was her until you said that! That's the kid the one character has to babysit, right?

"It's been 20 years. But I remember enjoying them."

I enjoyed some of the books more than others. There were some parts that really dragged, but the action scenes that came between were so good it was worth it, IMO. My favorite part is where Covenant has been in a coma for half the book and then suddenly he snaps out of it and does the last thing you were expecting which is way cool (won't say what because it's a big spoiler for anyone who hasn't read it).

"Sword of Shannara" didn't make me feel like I needed a bath. I felt like I might get leprosy, just reading it.

For some dumb reason I read the whole trilogy. Even considered reading the sequel trilogy. But then, I read Robert Jordan, too.

My problem is that I don't like things with characters I can't admire, or understand, or at least feel sorry for. Hence, no "Elric", no "Thomas Covenant".

Hey, I just noticed Shirley from "Laverne and Shirley" has a brief cameo, too.

That's pretty much why I quit reading it the first time I tried to read it. I guess the second time I forced myself through Covenant's unlikeableness and got into other aspects of the story. The sequel trilogy is better than the first trilogy, IMO. I don't like the way it ends, though.

So Robert Jordan's another bad one, huh? Have to try him. . .

Ever seen "Dark Crystal"? That's also up there. Oh, and Bakshi did some post-LotR fantasy films called "Wizards" and "Fire and Ice"--definitely candidates :)

BTW, I meant to ask, what year is "Full Metal Alchemist" set in?

Supposedly 1910, but it's a fantasy world.

I was looking at the map and it looked kinda like they were mixing fantasy locations with some real places like Mt. Fuji--interesting.

The names are "Western", so I think it's pretty straight fantasy.

Just got home from work today. I found out that I *love* teaching 6 to 14 year olds! They were so much fun!!! Yeah, I know they are only there for a fun summer class and pretty much no pressure for them but I had a *really* good time with them!

OTOH.... I got hit with a wall of administrative stuff when I got there and had to sort through all that. That part was not fun. But, it is done.

I need to see a dentist, someday. Trouble is, what with Dad being USAF and me Army, I've never been to any but a military socialized medicine dentist, and the last time was five years ago.. I don't know how to do it, or how much to expect to pay for the sort of things I'm likely to need.

Ain't none of y'all dentists, or very familiar with 'em, or work in a dentist's office, or like that?
