Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Tree and flower and leaf and grass

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

"Trust me, oatmeal does not have no texture. It has the texture of stuff that clings to the top of the throat and makes me ill."

[Shudder!] :) Yeah, now that you mention it, I guess the texture is kinda what I'd call mushy. Eewww! :)

I think it just goes to show us what's NOT meant for human consumption.

It's funny, but sometimes I think we have too much food in this country. So much so, we've become allergic to it, and can't "tolerate" some of it.

As Chris Rock once said..."Think anyone in Ethiopia is 'lactose intolerant'?" lol

Speaking of things that are not meant for human consumption...

TODAY IS DAY 37 SMOKE-FREE!!

I quit June 1st, no patch, no gum, no nuttin...and haven't looked back!

A great cold soup is Russian beet soup, called borsch.

Thai soup is great! Coconut milk like you mention really adds to it, too--I've tried tom yum gai with coconut milk :)

I don't think anyone in Ethiopia gets lactose in any form...

"I tell you though, one of the major differences (aside from my energy level going way up), was the complete and total lack of heartburn. Before I went low-carb, I was getting heartburn several times a day and chugging antacids like there was no tomorrow. After only a few weeks "bread, rice, and potato free" it was nearly completely gone!"

Hmmm--that's interesting!

I'm not on Atkins myself, but I teach exercise and I like to be aware of the latest in dieting research/technology, so I'm always interested to hear what results people have gotten from different diets. So far I've heard almost all good things from people who have been on Atkins. The only drawback I've heard is that someone told me they had to stay on it permanently--they didn't mention why, so I don't know if that's true for everyone or just this particular person. This was a girl who started off around 400 pounds and was down towards 250 now from Atkins.

"Hmm. According the Social Security people, I am not dead."

So you're un-dead :)

HUZZAH!!!

Let me know when you reach a year... I mean it! I will send you a gift certificate to a restaurant. I offer this to anyone who quits for a year. In 20 some-odd years and countless offers, I've been taken up on it twice.

My understanding (and experience) is that after 30 days, the physical addiction has passed and the psychological addiction is what is left. I found the psychological addiction the hardest to overcome. It's an amazing thing what your mind can convince you of!

You will look back on this as one of (if not the) hardest things you have ever done. I ran a marathon (26.2 miles)and still consider it the second-hardest thing I've ever done after quitting smoking.

You could say they're lacking lactose. . .

Ba-dum-dump :)

On people who are typically lactose intolerant: "Who is affected: Adults, most commonly Africans, Latin Americans, Asians or aboriginal North Americans."

Great job on the smoking!

We don't look at it as a diet...we look at it as a different way of eating after finding that the way we were eating was not nutritionally sound. Certainly, if we were to stop eating this way and return to the "not nutritionally sound" way of eating...I imagine things would revert back...I would have stomach problems again and Steve would gain the 40# back that he's lost.

As far as exersize...I don't do it. I'm not worried about my weight. However, Steve does exercise heavily with his co-workers during their lunch break. They play basketball HARD! But he has been doing the exersize for a couple of years and not loosing. It wasn't until he changed to a low-carb way of eating that he began to really drop the weight. 13# in the first two weeks...now at 40# since March 8th.

And he also has notices physical changes in the way his digestive system works, for the positive. And unexpected plus, he calls it.

In modern times, certainly. But the traditional diets of the area made extensive use of beef, beef blood, dairy, and in some areas, camel's milk.

Because it's not so much a "diet" as it is a "lifestyle change".

Hmm, that sounds rather Atkins friendly. Blood... eww...

I always figured the reason we have more food allergies today is that, a hundred years ago, someone deathly allergic to, say, nuts would have just died before reaching adulthood. Lactose intolerance isn't usually deadly, though...

But in general, I don't think milk was used as a drink. It was used to make other things, like cheese. Doesn't that affect people differently?

But you're right on the allergy thing, IMO.

Plus I'm sure there were lots of symptoms that people didn't KNOW were allergies or such like. And they had different names for them.

I don't like most dairy products. I'm beginning to suspect a very mild lactose intolerance - it tends to make me gassy. I have cheese on pizza, or tacos, and ice cream, but otherwise no dairy products at all....

You've probably figured out I'm a picky eater (I also don't like pasta)! But at least I eat bread. My dad doesn't eat bread. He will, however, eat hamburger buns.
