The scariest thing I ever saw was when I was poking through an unused desk in a storeroom, and found some three-year-old PC magazines. The high costs and low horsepower of the systems was amazing!

Have you seen PC Magazine lately? Rose and I saw a copy on a magazine rack the other day... barely reached 150 pages, very sad. Back in the day a copy could reach nearly 1.5 inches thick and a couple of pounds in weight...

I think it was, but I never played defender. Parsec was pre-defender. It came out in '82. Defender came out in '83.

My opinion on decadence in comics is basically in agreement with what Jim Steranko expresses here: STERANKO WAGES WAR ON COMIX TERRORISM! I haven't ever tried to quantify the degree of decadence at Marvel vs. DC. But at Marvel for instance I saw a trend towards decadence in the Spider-Man series with the influence of Todd McFarlane (whose depiction of Mary Jane bordered on the pornographic and who also drew a lot more blood and gore than any previous artist) and later the overdone clone series (which I guess you could argue was more just bad writing than decadence per se). In other Marvel strips I see signs of extreme PC-ness which encompass the decadence associated with PC--for instance increasing numbers of gay characters; the recent Avengers issue depicting Ant-Man emerging (literally) from sex with Wasp; and an ambiguous stance on the War on Terror in Captain America, etc. At DC I'd say I noticed a trend towards decadence starting with Frank Miller's Batman which made the character much more morally ambiguous than he'd ever been; and I also see Neil Gaiman contributing to that trend with for instance the orgy scene in Sandman; and there's also the same general trend towards PC-ness I see at Marvel, as illustrated by the left-wing alternative history of Superman. Those are some of the things I'm talking about when I refer to what I see as decadence. But maybe I'm overgeneralizing, since I'll admit I don't keep up as much as I used to.

Rose and I saw a copy on a magazine rack the other day... barely reached 150 pages, very sad.PCs aren't "adventurous" any more. They're like toasters, and you don't see 400-page magazines about toasters any more.

I got this freepmail yesterday from the uncle of one of our knife recipients. The uncle, a freeper, apologizes for not having enough time to stop by and brighten up our Hobbit Hole like he should, so he asked me to post this for him.

Got I just got a letter from Mike today! Boy, was I surprised. The letter is dated April 26, 2004, and was a thank you for the last package that I sent him. Mike gave me some more details.
Mike is staying at Baghdad International Airport, so his living accomodations aren't too bad.
Mike said that his unit got in a shootout with 5 Iraqi Policemen in Najaf, and Mike killed one of them. Mike said that the 5 IPs started shooting at 23 U.S. soldiers (including Mike). According to Mike the Iraqis didn't have a chance, so it ended quickly. No one can understand why those Iraqis attacked a larger, better armed group of soldiers. I guess that was some of those Iraqi Police volunteers that didn't get their backgrounds checked out too well!
Mike is okay, and counting the days. He's supposed to come home somewhere around Aug. 1st to the 15th. We're all hoping that he will be home as scheduled.
I've got a money order, and I'll knock out a short letter, and get that money in the mail to you tonight. Thanks again for what you've done for Mike. I really appreciate it.
