Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

A sudden tree or standing stone

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Found a site with the game I had:

Tolkien Boardgames

The Hobbit Game (Boardgame)

American Publishing Corp

Ages 10 to Adult

This is a kids type board game for two to four players ages 10 to Adult. According to the box lid – “The game allows a choice of risky or longer routes and gives you the option to buy various Magic Pieces (sword, map, Magic Ring, etc). You can even somewhat control the Creatures that attack your opponents.”

The object of the game is the first player to accumulate 200 or some agreed number of Gold Coins. The Gold is accumulated by successfully traveling from Start to the Gold Treasure at Lonely Mountain by any of the various trails. Players collect the amount of Gold shown on that trail and then return by the Home Path to Hobbit Hill (start) and select another trail for additional trips to Lonely Mountain. Of course some trails are more hazardous than others, but the player can accumulate more gold. The red spaces are the Adventure Spaces where the player draws an Adventure Card. At the beginning of the game, each player is dealt two Creature Cards (green) face down. Then the top Creature Card on the deck is then turned face up. This is the Creature that currently active. Each Player is given 40 Gold Coins (to purchase Magic Pieces when the opportunity arises). Players start at Hobbit Hill. When a player passes another player on a trail, they can collect 10 Gold Coins from that player. The green Creature Cards control the environment of the game and states what to do. The Creature can be changed whenever a player lands on a green space or another player “throw” a Creature Card from their own hand. The card is “thrown” before a player roles the dice on their turn. The cards cannot be thrown until the creature has been in play for at least two turns. Creature Cards can be purchased from the deck for 10 Gold Coins. Players may not have more than three Creature Cards. All players must adjust their journey to conform to the creatures that may be around at a particular time. The Magic Pieces may be purchased for the prices shown on the spaces on the board. These items can greatly help a player on his journey. They can also be purchased at Hobbit Hill at a lower cost than on the trail. The Magic Pieces are used with the Adventure Cards.

Game Consists of:

Two part playing board

Four moving Tokens, wooden (Red, Green, Blue, Orange)

Creature Cards (green) – (20)

Adventure Cards (red) – (20)

Gold Coins (yellow) - (Total 20: 12ea 10gp; 4ea 20gp; 4ea 30gp)

Equipment Pieces (heavy cardboard)

Dice (six sided)

Here's a description of how that one works (BTW if you click on the link there are several more close-up pictures of the board--it really is neat-looking!):

The Hobbit (boardgame) Milton Bradley

The Hobbit (boardgame)

Milton Bradley, 1977

A child's 3-D boardgame.

2-4 players

There is not much to say about this game. It is a typical 3-D childs game that were popular back then, with a theme from The Hobbit. You set up the pieces that adds backgrounds and elevates the board to two levels. Basically, you roll the dice and move your pawn. The first person to get to the finish, wins. To help explain the game play, it is just as easy to show you the rules:

Rules:

To Play:

Choose a Hobbit pawn, put it in the bases which matches the color of the cloak, and place it at start. Roll the dice. High roll goes first; all other players follow in turn clockwise.

To move, roll the dice and move your pawn the number of spaces showing on the dice. If you land on a space occupied by another player, a Hobbit, that player misses a turn. Green Spaces (with gold rings) and Stop Spaces (Spiders & Captured By Elves) are safe. More than one Hobbit can occupy these spaces without anyone losing a turn.

Troll Circle

Enter this circle and move in the direction of the arrow (counterclockwise). You can only leave this circle by landing on one of the two “Escape” spaces by exact count. If the number you roll carries you past the “Escape”, you must continue around the path until you land on one of the “Escape” spaces.

When you land on “Escape,” move your Hobbit to the green space marked with a ring on the other side of the Misty Mountains.

Gollum Circle

After you leave the Troll Circle, move along the path to the Gollum Circle.

On this circle, you must continue to move around the circle until your Hobbit lands on a colored space that matches the color of your Hobbit’s base. When your Hobbit lands on the right color, move it to the green space marked with a ring.

Goblin Circle

After you leave the Gollum Circle, the path brings you to the Goblins.

On this circle, you must land on “Saved By Eagles” to excape.

When you land on a “Saved” space, move your Hobbit onto the green space on the raised section.

Spiders

When moving through this section, you must stop on each of the three Spider Spaces no matter how high your dice roll is.

When you stop on the first Spider, roll the dice again. If you roll a 2, 4, or 6, you must stay on that space and roll again on your next turn. If you roll a 1, 3, or 5, move to the second Spider space and wait there till your next turn to roll again. You need to roll a 1, 3, or 5 in order to move to the third Spider. Wait till your next turn to roll again. After you have “killed” the third Spider (by rolling a 1, 3, or 5), move your Hobbit to the green space. Wait there till your next turn to continue along the path.

Elves

Move from the green space along the path to the space marked “Stop! Captured by Elves!” When you get to this space, you must stop and roll the dice again.

If you roll a 1, 3, or 5, you must stay on the space and roll again on your next turn. If you roll a 2, 4, or 6, move your Hobbit to the green space at the base of the waterfall.

Continue along the path on your next turn.

To Win:

The first player to reach the last space by exact count wins the game.

Egads, that's interesting.

Neat, and disturbing.

I am away for a little while and you go and open up a new hobbit hole. :)

Hello again to all. If any of you don't remember me, I am ecurb's little sis. I used to post a lot more frequently a couple of years ago. I am working on visiting more often to get to know everyone again, and meet the people who have joined since I left.

Just wanted to drop in and say hi.

Yes, as a matter of fact in about 9 days, I will have completed my first year of teaching. I am teaching 5th and 6th grade Language Arts, and History at a private school. It has been tough, but wonderful.
