Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

A sudden tree or standing stone

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

They're a shall-issue Concealed Carry state, and the other related gun limits don't look too bad... ;~D

Cool.

I'd be unlikely to carry a gun, but having one in my apartment could be a good idea. If I could find a good gun safety course in the area.

I bet some of the regulars on this thread would be happy to advise on a good gun for a young lady...

S&W .357 Magnum... Model 19. It was my first gun, still my most accurate and comfortable gun, and you can shoot either more comfortable .38 bullets or big ole +P .357 magnum loads through it. It's the one I would reach for.

If you wouldn't plan on packing it, I'd get you a bigger heavier pistol like this one for the first gun, because the heavier the gun, the less it kicks, and the more accurate you are.

Later, when you want to wear it, you can try the little snubby lightweight guns or semi-autos ;~D

Where I'm going to be living is an incredibly safe town. Very little violence or anything. But... in my apartment, at night, alone, a gun would at least give me peace of mind. Once I know how to use it. Since I won't be having little brothers around, I wouldn't be afraid of other people getting hurt.

But I don't think I even could 'pack' - I'm pretty sure guns aren't allowed on university grounds. And I wouldn't be that comfortable with it, either.

Coupla years with some real Coloradoans should take care of that.

Well, after Inauguration Moot that may not be a bad idea.

Of course... Here too. Statistics about the odds of being broken into mean very little when there are noises outside.

You won't know until you have the option and you see the way it changes how you ~think~. I had mine at school. Didn't carry to class either in my situation, but you may reconsider it depending on what the situation is walking out of a night class to parking.

Guess I'll figure it out. I've still got a bit of 'guns go off accidentally and kill people' mentality that I picked up from my mom - she doesn't mind other people having guns, but is scared of them herself - but I imagine I'd get over that.

In about 15 minutes with me at the range you'd get over that... I'd love to take your mother too.

My room-mates at school were the same way. If you've never been around them, they are forboding and unknown. I love bein' around people the first time they fire one. If it is done right, and the emphasis is on safety and they see how under control the situation is, I have never had newbies and even gun fearing liberals ~not~ have a really good time. And it changed their minds on guns.

You mom had different concerns with little ones around too. They change the whole situation.

Well, I've used a gun before (target shooting. I liked the rifles much more than the pistol). And like I said I'm probably going to get one. I'll just look into the local organizations and stuff. There must be some basic course I could take one Saturday...

And yes, I completely respect my mother's position, because kids and guns are a bad idea. At this point, six of the seven of us could be taught not to play with guns; but the little guy just doesn't have the same action-consequence sequencing yet. He'll do things that he knows will get him in trouble, and he can't keep his hands off things.

However, when we girls eventually start dating, I bet Dad gets a rifle.
