She did pretty well for a 3 year old dog that has never had a game bird in her mouth. She was very suspicious of the frozen/thawed (and rather whiffy by noon) ducks, so we worked her with the pigeons. Even with them, she would swim out and then circle them a couple of times like a shark before she grabbed them and brought them in. Just to show that she isn't a complete idiot, I did a couple of long marks with a bumper . . . and of course she retrieved that with great enthusiasm and even came to heel and delivered.
I'm going to get a Dokken imitation dead duck and a can of waterfowl scent and work her with that. Also a couple of freeze dried pheasant wings so she can get used to that smell as well. One of the trainers at the test suggested a live pigeon with its flight feathers cut -- but I don't know how to get one, other than some bird seed, a cardboard box, and a stick with a string attached . . . < g >
