The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

She'll do fine I hope! If the farrier is good with her, she will actually improve for next time.

I read somewhere that a high % of horse injuries come from foals though because they are little and people let their guard down whereas when you work with a 1 ton one , safety stays forefront.

Yeah, I'm finding that when she sees something not bad , each time she gets better. I have to call the vet too and find out his horse day so I can take them over. I watched the last time. This time I want him to let me give the immunization and draw the blood.

They would have to be counting pretty big foals up to two year olds in that group. When they are young, they might be bad, but it is the foal that is most likely to get injured if you do things wrong. They kick, they rear up on ya, but they're just at bruising strength. You can teach them not to do those things while they are still small.

Now... if they are talking about breaking and training older foals that haven't been handled till they were two...

Maybe that's what it was. Just something I read in a horse magazine:')

It will go a lot bigger than the management likes them to go anymore. it'll go till 65,000 posts, as Becky said. Trouble is, when they get that big, they are hard to moderate, controversial threads, where there are a lot of flame wars going on and posts that have to be deleted, they don't like them getting bigger than 5,000, because moderating them slows down the whole forum. Ours could probably slip under the radar awhile because we aren't flaming each other.... but we'll prolly make a new one tonight or maybe tomorrow morning.

That will be a good idea, because what happens if a horse hater come on? They have to be stopped at once.

I just got in from riding Rusty. Was starting out on Trash, but he has lost a shoe, and Tami asked me to try to find it. Tried to retrace some of what I rode with him yesterday, no luck. I'm not sure when it came off. He had it when I started yesterday, but not sure if it was on when we got back. I make sure they are there when I start.

His shoes have only been on a week today. I'll look some more in the run he's in, but so far I haven't seen it there either.

There were some puddles on the trails yesterday, none in the arena. I just am not going to go look on all the trails we did yesterday, I don't go on them by myself, to far out.

Tami worries that if she puts a different shoe on then he won't be level. One shoe more wore then the other. I don't think there could be that much difference.

I was wondering why she just didn't want to replace it. I was thinking it can't be that expensive. That's probably why the ferrier goes outside with each one and holds them up in the light.

Ok, English people:) whats "Hunter Equatation"?

I just talked to the lady at the barn where Harley is. She said the people looking to buy him are leaning towards buying him, but they are having one more person come look at him, a palomino "expert", to see if he thinks the horse will do what they want.

I need to vent a bit:), how many experts do they need??? Why would a palomino expert be needed??? I don't believe color has anything to do with what a horse can or cant' do..???

The little girl has ridden him and did just fine at all gaits. Loves cantering him.

He is taking small jumps beautifully. What the hell more do they want??? How long do I let this go on??? I told her I need for them to decide by the end of the week.

Oh, and what is your defination of a "green" horse. She said she told them he is green. And that scares them a bit. Is a horse that walks, trots, canters in the correct lead, sidepasses, pivots, not spooky a green horse??? IMO, No. Are horses considered green till they know something specialized???

I've never found a lost shoe when I have looked..... sometimes stumble on it years later though.

There is some bad farrier work going on there. I never ever ever lose shoes, and the only time I did was when they were way overdue. What goes on there?

Tami has some funny notions, IMO:)

The shoes have only been on a week, replacing it with a new one should not make that much difference I wouldn't think.

Are we talking hunter equitation on the flat, or over fences. Either way, equitation is the riders huntseat form. My definition of a green horse is one that is young, or who isn't particularly broke. Perhaps when they are saying green, they mean green over fences. Which he is, no?
Some horse people are persnickity.

Well, I very, very seldom lost them either using the guy I'm using again now. The guy that shoes for Tami is the one I tried and didn't like, it is actually Santiago, the guy in the picture I posted last week. He is a great trainer, but I don't think much of his shoeing.

It does happen occasionally that a horse on the trails I ride on will get the shoes hung on a rock and jerk it off. But you will know it when it happens. I don't remember him having a problem yesterday. Our weather too, according to the farriers, is making it hard to keep them on. These dry, wet, dry, wet conditions. I think that's a crock. Like I said Chris shoed for me for 7 years, and I don't think I lost more then a handful. So I would say this is human error on the part of the farrier

I did just talk to Tami and I don't think she is going to agree with that tho. From what she is saying she is thinking maybe he won't make it riding on the rocks.... I'm not sure what she is going to do.

I was told the kid wants to jump. So it must be over jumps.

Are you saying a "young" horse is always considered green, even if they have the foundation down perfect, and have been lots of miles???

Harley is 5. But I would say he is the best horse I've ridden.
