The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Beaker, chocatawsquaw use to ride a Quarter/Percehron cross. She was a very calm BIG horse. Made a nice mix.
Hmm.. interesting. Percheron/Quarter seems to be a common cross. That's what I need. Big and solid. Plus I love draft horses anyway. Fjords and Fresians are my absolute favorite. Fresians are just drop dead gorgeous, and make me melt, but they are insanely expensive. I couldn't find one under 20,000, and most ran from 30-40,000. In comparison a Fjord is much more reasonable, because you can get one with a price tag thats much much much less. However, because they hardly get over 14.2, between us I'd be the only one able to ride it.

I have a lab border collie cross, who loves car rides, water and ice cream. Makes the perfect companion for a summer daytrip. :-)

I love Fjords. I rode one at the college and he was so cute. He was just about 14 hands, mabe an inch bigger. He had quite a canter.

We're picking up a Hanoverian/thoroughbred cross in a couple weeks from a cross-breeder in Canada. Found her sight quite by accident and her breeding program has a lot of percheron/thoroughbred crosses. We fell in love with one of her 40 or so foals online and when she sent us the video of all of them we fell in love with another 10. They're reasonably priced and most of them look like they'll fill the bill.

Took his temp...NO fever!! Head in the feed and herbs and even lay down last night on that side! WooHoo! Now just a little maintenance and he should be back in the field causing us headaches and chuckles all over again....He is the typical bullheaded old man ;)

Fresians are awsome, but they have a harder time in dressage. They have a naturally higher head carriage than other horses because their necks are set a bit higher, but they are magnificent too. I love black horses.

When I worked on a farm in sacramento we got a horse who had a horribly bowed tendon. It was a low bow. When he came off the truck his shoe was half off and he was almost walking on his ankle. It nearly curdled my stomach to see it. His ankle was the size of a melon. We never had a vet see him, we just took care of him ourselves. He came off of a racetrack in southern california and the owner was going to put him down, but the lady who runs the test barn had fallen in love with him so she took him. She never had the time to take care of him so he got worse and lost condition. You could count all his bones by the time we got him. I wish I had known who his trainer was so I could have knocked him a good one. I saw his workouts and something was messed up. Looked like he got hurt in a race, had time off, and then he was run back too fast. His name was Walk on the Beach and he was rather large, almost 18 hands, but a really sweet horse. By the time I left his bow had almost went completely down.

From what I've read, breeders rave about the breed's dressage abilities. I got the chance to judge them in 4-H state horse judging, and I couldn't do my job, because I was too busy gaping in awe. They are just so beautiful.

oh yea, they can do awsome, it's just their head set that you really have to work on, because it's just natural for them to have their heads higher.

I loved when we raced, but there are dozens trainers I'd like to thump myself. My big, beautiful gelding was ruined by an exercise rider who felt him step wrong on a cuppy track and worked him anyhow. He was looking stakes class til she blew out his stifle that day.

He's been home for years now and has been re-schooled. We handled the stifle ourselves and he came back fine. He's doing lovely at his new career....my riding horse.

Speaking of exercise riders, when I was in racing school one of the tapes we watched was of really bad exercise riders. Most of them were just plain awful. The man (cant remember his name) was talking about how bad riding can wreck a race horse. Any horse for that matter. When I worked at Aqueduct in New York I saw quite a few horses that had been pin fired. Most were two year olds who had bucked their shins and just needed rest!!!!!!

Just back from riding with Celia. We did about 3 hours. We went some places I only go when I'm with another adult. Wish I would have thought to take my camera:(. These places to far from home to go by myself. Way back in the woods.

Have we taught you ~nothing~? ;~D

We are waiting for it to warm up enough to ride. It's starting to get really cool at night here. Bay is such a shedding mess, I'd rather wait till it's warm enough to bathe him before putting tack on him.

Actually my camera is not that easy to carry on the horse. I guess it's an older model of digital camera, it uses a 3 1/2 inch floppy disk. We thought the pictures it took were better then the ones from the newer models, and it zooms more. But it's a bit large, and takes up all the space in my pouch that I use to carry my water in.

Heard from the mower guy?

Becky

Oh - I know the type of camera, my brother had one.... Sony Mavica right... that's the same type Inge Cav has too. Mine is a really little one, and I don't like that it doesn't zoom well, but it takes such high res pictures, I can often zoom by cropping.

No word from mower man. :~\

Mower man is the guy that is supposed to come and brush hog my 'back forty'. He was here to look at it two weeks ago, and he keeps not showing up.

Posting pictures is easy.... Inge cav needs to learn too. Becky can explain too, I will if she doesn't before I get back. I can't now because ecurbh is waiting on me to go for a walk :~D
