The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I like little tricky parts like that. Great challenges. And harder going down like that than up. ;~D

I went on a trail ride, and it was a blast and a half. there were hills, to ride up and down, and logs to jump, and it was fun stuff! :-) Did about an hours worth. The trails were really narrow though. Oh, and my trainer's wired haired dauchound (sp) got run at by a hawk but she's ok. We heard a dog scream a couple of times, all panicked, and then nothing. So all three of us go tearing after the dog looking for her, and Kathy got to her in time. Thank goodness.

those little dogs can get in more trouble. Glad you had a good ride. I worked with the mare again today. Pictures are downloading. It will take about an hour. A bike and a horse ride? I know you are young but you have to be tired:')

She did so good today. She stood perfectly still while I groomed her and seemed to like it. She still didn't want to pick those back legs up but didn't turn away. I thought I felt/heard a light click once when I picked one up but I don't see any stiffness and didn't hear it again. She stood still when I saddled and briddled her.

I worked first just lunging her with the lead rope outside. She did really well. A few more times and I can probably stand still in the middle. She walked up on the wash rack just fine and guess who followed her?.

Lunging in the round pen needs work. I didn't have my lunge rope with me and used free lunge. She just ran. I couldn't get her to slow or turn well and difficulty getting her to whoa facing me. Eddie says she acted like she had been in a round pen before and ran. Who knows? I'm going to have to use the rope though

She didn't move when I mounted. Riding still needs some work but was much better. I found that she does follow leg cues but I have to put my heel in:'(. I would like to get her sensative to touch like Okie. She's a bit barn sour and wants to weave towards the barn so that needs some work too. I did notice that a few times she seemed to breath a little hard. Not bad though. I thought I might have had the saddle on a little snug but she did so while it was off. Kind of like a snort but where she breaths heavy. Maybe me looking fot stuff and just her.

Tomorrow Okie goes for a trailer ride and I'm gonna see how she loads and walk her and then ride her around the boogies and see how she does and Eddie going to drive by in the car and see how she reacts. Yall think of anything else I need to check?

I saw your post about your horses behaving. Today these two did ok together but when I went to get her lead rope, Okie by her side and gave a screaming neigh when I walked up to her and tried to kick her. She went sideways to get away pushing me. I went with her and everything ok but I got to thinking maybe I should have done something to him. By the time I thought about it though it was too late. What would you have done to him? Anything?

Glad she did well today! She'll learn your leg cues... horses don't get 'hard' sided so much as they learn to ignore meaningless thumping by dude ranch people and student riders. If she learns that the cue has meaning, she'll likely respond to it. For now, don't make the leg cue harder if you want her to soften, merely apply your leg and then follow it up with your hands.... she'll learn to respond to your softer cues that way.

If this is a breathing issue, and not just something like a big sigh, or blowing at a scary thing, it'd be worth a vet check. A vet check would be a good idea anyway.

Well, we'd love to help, but before we can set you up, we need to know what sex you are and perhaps one or two other criteria for this match to work!

Okie was upset because you were taking his friend. But I would have tried to make him stay away while you are leading her out. When I take horses out of the pasture, I usually have to have a buggy whip so the others don't try to follow, but i don't always have to do this.

I'm going to get her checked anyway and it was only a few time. Kind of like a deep breath but she was exercising a lot too.
