Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
She doesn't like to carry frozen ducks very much. We're going to have to work on this . . .
Well, she's right! If you want to hunt frozen ducks, go to the market! ~grins~
Falling off less is the direct result of staying on more, and you just can't beat that! :-)
I think it was freezing her lips - she put it down several times, nosed it over and over, and finally picked it up by a wing and brought it back to me.
She goes after bumpers like gangbusters - but the field trial uses live fliers. My trainer says that in the "Started" class (the rank beginners) the judge will probably give me a recently deceased waterfowl if I ask for it for Shelley to practice with before her run.
I don't think you are nit picking. And I think you are wise to take your time to make your mind up.

That's your age showing:) I think the older we get the more cautious we become.

I just got in from playing with JP. I was so body tired, I didn't even take him and go do my weekly shopping. We just hung together at his house and played with toys:), When he napped so did I. Feel somewhat more refreshed, but still wore out feeling. Pictures are loading now.
Unless I suddenly get very energetic which right now I would say won't happen:), I'm not doing anything horse wise today. Tomorrow Trash and Rusty will get rode.

I think I would always feel nervous on a bike with no back rest.

Well I'm off to ride. Lets hope I don't have another gate incident.
These are pictures of a trail ride I went on yesterday with 6 other people.
The state park we were at:

Some of the horses getting ready. This is my daughters horse Dot.

Rocky, my stud horse and Heather:

An idea of the type of trail we rode:

That's the head of the horse I rode:)
Some of the riders, Jenny, Travis:

At a rest stop.

One last one. This guy said I would have to get him to sign a release before I could post his picture:)he was trying to avoid his picture being taken:), but I think I got a good one. This is Santiago, a very good horse trainer, who said next time he gets a rank colt he was taking it to this place to get it's attention:)

Becky

This looks like portion of the trail I wouldn't want my horse dozing on! Hear Hair say "Watch your feet!"
Nice park but how come you are usually the photographer? :') Tell Santiago hi!
There are portions of trail up there that are very very rocky. It does make them pay attention. Mostly when climbing or desending.
Becky
Jenny took pictures too, and I just enjoy taking them:)

Is that a dod ahead? I found out yesterday that "she" doesn't like dogs either. She's not as nice as Okie about it though. He just wants to chase them. She stands really still and then kicks at them. Silly stable dog wasn't intimidated and just kept coming back. I had to run him off before she got him.
Or maybe a dog?
Yeah, it's a "dod":)
My daughter's border collie Jeb. I got a bit worried about him, there was not much water on the trails and he probably did 3X's the distance we did because of all the running around he did:), he's very young. He was the main reason we stopped and took the rest. We gave him a drink from the bottle carrier I had tied to my saddle. We headed back to camp to drop him off, but once there everyone decided they had had enough.
Becky
Out of here. I should have left 15 minutes ago. Later
Well, dogs shouldn't be underfoot anyhow! Bay reaches out and bites them if he can. Gidget avoids him. The pony chases but luckily just feigns to kick at them when they are in pasture..... or they've gotten lucky she missed.
I've only rarely taken dogs on trail.... Took Zulu a couple times years ago because she had great endurance for a small dog. Gidget is way too fat now to make it more than a mile ;~D
Where we are, there's just too many other riders we cross paths with on the trails where we go, too many other people with dogs, and no real control over them when you are on horseback. When you meet up with someone else, the dogs inevitably run up. Other people's dogs running up under and around us is usually a pain, so I figure mine would just be a pain to someone else. And there is a small chance of them really being stupid with a bear.
