The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Neither of them are 'water rollers' but I have had a horse that did!

Okie's feet fit him.... I wouldn't give him a complex about it.

Now... I am sure Inge Cav could beat me with his draft horses, but the biggest feet I ever had were on the mustang I had in high school. ~That~ horse had big feet!

My horses are pets, I have no trouble with it ;~D

Yes, some horses want to drop and roll in water, rider and all. Be aware of it if they want to stop in the middle and paw...

would never get complacent but .... Very True! Horses will *always* nip that tendancy in the bud, no matter how well trained. And always when there are lots of witnesses.

Tell me about it. Witnesses a must:'). Awhile back I posted that my horse resistance to get on a concrete slab that I call the wash rack. I worked and worked with hih and finally got him doing it perfectly and brought my husband out to "show off" A bunch of women sitting around watching too. The horse showed his butt and acted like we had never even worked on this. I was so mad I left. I came back in about an hour caz I couldn't let him get away with it. No one around and he walked right up like no big deal!

It's true, very little in this world surpasses the horse's ability to keep us humble.

How was your ride on Rusty yesterday? If you reported back on it, I missed it.

Rusty did great. He is so funny. He was acting like he'd never seen those trails before, looking back and forth the whole way. He did sweat about what I think he should have given as it was a cooler day. His neck and some shoulder was damp, and under the saddle and cinch was wet. I really don't think any of them would have sweated more then that. We rode about 1 hour 50 minutes. I hope to take him out again today.

I'm going to a barrel race with Kristy and Jenny tonight. He will go with me and stand tied to the trailer. Jenny's running Rocky. She has to get him use to an indoor pen as that is what will be at the fair.

Well, the whole trail is different now! It's been awhile. Glad he seems to be sweating normally. It will be super if he can get back to normal for you.

Now it's about time for me to get showered and such for work. Talk more this afternoon if I don't make it back.

I simply turned a mostly blind eye to it for a few years until I had a safe environment to train and an experience person around with more commonsense advice.

I've read this post several times, and find this interesting. I like hearing differnt methods of training.

I'm taking this as you did finally get him trained to stand tied. How did you go about doing it?
