Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Poking her head in the tack room is a bold and friendly thing to do! There isn't anything really wrong with the way she's built that I can see, so any comments below are purely picking at the details, as far as I am concerned, OK?
Overall, she's a nice looking horse on first impression! She has kindof a big head (if her head were only the dark part on the first picture, it'd be better) but a kind and pleasant expression with that white face.
She'd match Okie well, they would not clash in the pasture together!
I don't see anything wrong with her shoulder, so if he's choppy, it's because of her short upright pasterns. Pretty common trait in paints maybe, the only other paint I have ridden a lot had the same upright pasterns.
She has the little tiny feet that have been fashionable in the Paint and QH show ring in recent years.... Would be a problem if you were going to game her or jump her or something, little feet and upright pasterns are susceptable to ringbone and Navicular if they do a lot of hard pounding work, but I don't think you'll be pushing that envelope.
BTW....
I wouldn't let her nose up to Okie.... she's likely to strike at him. let them talk from a distance, but avoid nosing them right up. Introducing horses on a line sometimes supercharges the greeting and makes them more sharp than they would be on their own loose.
I recommend the trainer saddling her up and riding first so you can watch her way of going and the trainer can ensure to you her safety before you get on. After that, you can try her.
I figure that's the best way to get around backing those things:')
Thanks. Eddie riding too and we need another horse to trail ride together.
Would he ride Okie, or are you looking at a new horse for him?
Here's the pic of ecurbh and me on that trail ride a few weeks back.
Cindy.... see this QH mare that ecurbh's on?.... she's built a lot like the one you are looking at.
You sure about the feet? Eddie and I were talking about they were huge to us and looked as big as Okie's.
And I thought you wanted to let your horses have AC too while you were transporting them down the road.
Probably mostly Okie when we ride together. Okie can carry him easy. I'll continue to ride him solo. I have lots of x to decide but this one needs to fill out first probably.
We are taking a 3 day "vacation" at the end of Sept for a basic horsemanship class. He really doesn't want a loaner so we have been looking for number 2.
I am sure about the feet! Those aren't big feet! "as big as Okie's" is comparing her to another paint ;~D
Look at the other horses around, especially non-QH's and compare.
Oh, ok lol. Mostly QHs around me:')
Oh! The owner also brought back a little black and white paint that she bought for someone else. I has not seen one before. He's gorgeous. The little girl named him Oreo:')
Everyone around the stables so excited "momma" is shopping and sending horses home :')
She's a paint.... any white above the knee or hock counts!
ohhhhhh:')
I've been looking for a pic of Bay that actually shows his feet. Couldn't find a good one from the side. Here's an Arab foot - Arabs have wider sand feet... And I think his are about average. ;~D
There is a point where white on the face counts too.... a normal blaze or stripe doesn't, but I think it begins to count as 'color' if the white crosses below the line from their eye to their nostril (or something like that)
Poor Okie. He has sissy feet :'( lol
