Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Is this a horse you went and looked at? Mare?
Ok. I can have this horse if I want her . The owner bought her with me in mind. She said I could sell her back within 30 days if I don't like her and she'll use her for a school horse. She wants 1300 plus 400 that she spent for shipping. She said she will let here go to me for cost. She is around 10. No papers. She bought her from a guy she knows that buys horses at the end of the summer from dude ranches. She was supposed to have been the wrangler. The owner says she seems very gentle but has a fast walk and a bumpy trot. She's a little underweight and we measured her at 15 hands. Just a little shorter than Okie. Supposedly she has only been used for dude trails but no history before that and they sell every year. She's scuffed up some and her left ear has an old split. The owner says that she might still move a little when mounting. She's not sure.
Horses read your body language very well. Usually, if you want them to do something new to them. Just act like it is no big deal to it and most of the time they will go right along with you.
Have someone try her and work her fully before you decide. If she was remotely well treated, that experience ought to make her bomb proof. You need to see her tie, her grooming behavior, lunge her, and see her walk trot and canter... Trail will come later on if that is hard to arrange, but doing a test that you can lead her into a new area and she keeps her feet on the ground would be great. She is probably good at that part, but probably a little barn sour... they all are if you let them. There could be worse problems. A barn sour horse will never get you lost ;~D Standing while you mount will come... and so will your ability to mount even if they don't. ;~D
That's what I was telling myself today. I got all psyched up. I was just going to walk him up like I expected him to go right in. It worked fine till he planted those feet. He hates trailers but I was actually pleased with how he acted around this one today. He would have been all over the place if I had him this close to my old straight trailer. We might have been able to make him get in and it may still come to that but today I just wanted him to check it out. No experience here. Maybe I'm being too easy with him but I would rather him decide to go in happy than fighting.

I thought she was a little high but she was bought to be a school horse so I guess the stable owner felt it was a good price. I have 30 days to try her and the owner wants to see how we do. Tomorrow I thought I would see how she loads in the trailer and how Okie responds to her and if dried out maybe saddle her up in the round pen. The owner won't be back until tomorrow night though and she wanted to wait for her because she wants to see how I can mount. It's good that I can have 30 days to make a final decision. I liked the way she looked but she has a high wither and her back low but the girl showing her to me said with weight she will probably fill out and be about the size of Okie. You have your red pen? :') Do you see anything structural that concerns you?
We are set up for a gooseneck but they are so expensive around here.
Yup, bought 125 bales a few weeks ago. Should get us through most of the winter.
Been learning how to ride, even went on a trail ride with Hair about 6 weeks ago.
You will get the hang of it and be an old saddle bum in no time at all.
I keep telling them but they don't believe me but my goal is a drivable horse RV:')
Why are you thinking about getting another horse?
