The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Good morning! Today we will put up the Bush banner in the pasture and I would like to mow. I think it's going to be a nice day.... may make time for a ride... :~D

I haven't switched to the daily wormer. I looked at it as expensive since the bucket of it is expensive, but I haven't read to see how long that would hold me. Worming with the pastes every two months just doesn't seem that hard or expensive to me.

Sadly, my horse died when I was five and we had to move to another house and leave her stick and mane behind.

That is such a sad story! You know... if you got one now, you no longer have to ask for permission! :~D

Southeastern PA. We've had fall weather for much of the last 2 weeks, but this morning, it's 84 and with 59% humidity. Yuk.

We had a wonderful ride, with the exception of my big boy being sore footed. My farrier has gone senile. His last two jobs have been awful and I warned him this time, apparently to no avail. He's done and I'm considering doing the trimming myself. This guy will come for emergencies at a moments notice, but what good does that do if he botches it. All the other farriers around here are like a month's waiting period, if the deign to come at all. Drat!

WE did some major schooling on a thoroughbred I wanna sell. He's being wasted here. He's definitely a ladies' man (he'll come right to me but avoids my partner like the plague...probably track memories). He needs to be with a woman who just wants to trail ride him and love him. He's currently a little too much horse for an inexperienced rider, but he wants to learn and I think regular working will turn him.

I'm gonna sit out the heat for a few hours and then maybe take a non-working ride this evening.

Enjoy everyone!

Lynn

Good morning! We've had so much rain that the pasture might actually grow, if they weren't chewing it down faster than it can catch up!

So we went out and raked up the last of the fallen apples in the back forty so we could turn the horses back to the woods, which we did, and we also took advantage of this cool misty morning to burn a pile that's been sitting all summer because it's been too dry to light it.

It's lush in the back forty...

Now to go get the posts to put up our neat Bush Cheney pasture banner in time for the convention!

I'm back from church. I was in the same town as Okie. It flooded so I doubt if I'll be able to find any place to ride. I'm gonna go check after while though because I want to just tie him to the trailer awhile.

I told JJ it was raining cats and dogs and of course any 4 y/o going to take that literally. Yall have any idea where this saying came from?

Banners up! Bay made a liar out of me because he didn't even blow at it too much.... I shoulda given him more credit ;~D

Gidget likes the shade of it best of all...

Bay and the pony consider the message...

This is from the road going by outside the front fence! It actually looks bigger and more visible in person.... the lens shrinks it.

I think it really is supposed to mean there are cats and dogs everywhere, rather than just that it is raining hard, but we have confused it over time.

The French describe a hard rain by saying it is "raining ropes" Which visually, makes a lot more sense!

Just got in from church and lunch with the kids. I usually do my afternoon feeding at 3:00, it's 2:00 now, so I'll probably wait till after they eat to ride. I'm just going to ride Rusty. Now seems a good time to take a good afternoon Sunday snooze:)

Have you done any lurking on this thread? I just went thru what you are going thru now with farriers. You have my sympathy. I tried the barefoot thing, but it didn't work for me, too many rocks. I went back to my old farrier who had shoed for me for 7 years, but got rather bad about not returning calls. We had a talk:), and he understands where I'm coming from. But even if he doesn't return calls he at least shoes good, so I've made up my mind, and told him, I'll just call every hour till I get hold of him. Won't count him getting messages, or returning calls:)

He's currently a little too much horse for an inexperienced rider, but he wants to learn and I think regular working will turn him.

99% of the horses out there would be good horses with REGULAR work. But get that across to horse owners and I'll send you a cigar:) And of course what I mean by regular is not once a month.

Your banner looks good. So does the background:), so does your back forty:)

I won't even take a picture of my back "forty". Working my pasture is this winters project. It got in really bad shape because I didn't keep up with the rocks and dead fall. This summer I bent two blades on the mower, so I had to quit mowing back there till I get the rocks and deadfall cleaned up That's winter time work.

Thanks! All the scrubby low trees that are behind Bay in the second back forty pic is the stuff the brush cutter is going to take out, leaving all the big trees. Might be able to get more grass there in time.

No.... we should expect to hear or see him this week maybe. I don't know if his schedule was delayed by all the rainy days or not.

about 40's blocks away! it is very quiet here!

But NY is a very unusual place in the 70's I lived on 100 st and on block 99 was SRO's and one would know not to walk on that block.

I would enter off of B'way through 99 to West End ave and than walk down my block it was that broken up!
