Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Loading in a slant, do I walk the horse in or send him in by himself like in a straight?

In the controlled circumstances of the show ring she does fine without the martingale, but I still use it in the field because she has a tendency to go inverted when she's in a hurry, and if we're galloping in company she gets a little excited (well, excited for her anyway. This mare is so placid you would never imagine she was Bold Ruler/Northern Dancer breeding. I'm sure they had her pegged for a broodmare almost as soon as she hit the ground.) When she's inverted she hits her fences, and I'd as soon not do that at speed in the middle of nowhere . . . < g >
Also, the little kids do take some lessons on her, so she needs to be re-educated periodically.

Sorry, took a while for me to work back around to this thread. I never mind vet questions though, feel free. If I can't answer it, then I need to do the research anyway!
Anhydrosis (lack of sweating) has been associated with hypothyroidism, but it hasn't been proven. Underactive thyroids are often over-diagnosed in horses anyway, because 'normal' values fluctuate constantly even in the same horse.
*chuckle* Yeah, inversion plus speed plus solid fence is def. a recipe for disaster.
Beren's on the short-necked side as well as having his neck set on a tad low, his worst bit of conformation really. We're constantly having to work on suppling exercises and such. Being gone most of the year for the last 5 years hasn't helped any. I'm looking forward to getting back and getting the both of us back in shape.
Oh my, another angle to consider.
I have a horse that didn't sweat at all when I first got him, I bought him in early spring so didn't realize he had the problem till summer. That was 3 yrs ago.
He is slowly getting better.
But he was just diagnosed about 2wks ago as having under active thyroid. The vet said that has probably been his problem from the start. He also is always a little high on respiration. She thinks he probably has some permanent lung damage do to an infection he had, probably since I got him, that was caused from the panting he did because of the no sweating:) Vicious cycle. She said his repiration was not high enough to cause him problems now, but it knocks him out of competitive trail riding which was what I bought him for:(.
He's such a good horse I'm going to work him on barrels because at arenas I can always stop and hose him off if he gets too hot.

LOL. That reminds me. My husband use to manage a resturant. He was short of help once and asked me to come work for him for awhile. I did on the condition we didn't tell the other employees I was his wife. You know how people would have acted if they had known that. Well that is a secert that can't be kept forever, but it was kept for a pretty good while. When it finally came out you could see the looks on the faces of people trying to remember what they had said about him to me. It was hilarious.

Yeah, I understand a whole lot more Spanish than I can speak (esp the bad words:') Comes in handy.

It's a 3 horse but it's not a long one. I only need it for two. Full, looks like it would be very crowded. I never tied mine in the straight and just closed the door behind his butt when he went in and then I could open the other door and go in beside the divider. This one has a good size door on the front passenger side but I would be reluctant to open it with an untied horse. I was thinking I could try to walk him in standing on his left and turn him and tie him but I don't want to be between his backside and his escape route if he decides to back out a few times before settling in and I sure don't want anyone closing the door with me in without an exit.
I'm out of here in about 15 minutes. I'm going to go pick up my trailer and someone has a "momma" for Okie that they want me to look at. Talk with yall Sunday.
In a slant, walk the horse in, rather than sending him in.... You should be able to walk up and either tie him, or close in his divider, without feeling cramped. The only one I would not tie until you are outside with the door closed is the ~last horse~ in. I wouldn't tie the back horse until the door is closed... in that situation, untie and have someone hold that horse with a line through the window when the door is open. What you dont want is for the horse to try to step back out still tied. Untie and hold from the outside before opening the door on the ~last horse~.... on the inner horses, step in and untie and have a line on before you open the inner dividers.
Make sense? The risk is their ability to step back still tied. they can really hurt themselves if they do that.

Been a few years since I've been dumped now.... Was a crazy Arab mare the lady would have given me if I'd have taken her! The last time I got bruised up was when Bay fell down on trail year before last. He tripped and we both hit the dirt. It was a fluke trip that made me nervous enough to be hyper sensitive about him, and so it was the first obvious symptom of his Navicular.
My old barn has a four horse slant load, and we just walked them in and tied them. There wasn't much of a problem.
