The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I understand that, it was only last year that I finally felt comfortable with my Beren and the local terrain to really let him go. 15 years old and not in serious condition and he can *still* turn in a 2 min mile.

You know, I'm fine on a trail. I've opened them up and ducked trees, and zigzagged between trees no problem. But in an arena. It's a whole differnt ball game. I think it's the take offs. I like to build speed, not be at full speed in two strides. I'm the same on a motorcycle. I just can't go full throttle from a dead stop, but on a straightaway, I can gradually increase speed till I'm doing 90 with no problem. Oh well, I have nothing but time, and it gives me a goal to work on:)

BTW, we love looking at pictures. If you have some of your horses post them. We all usually post new pictures of our horses everyweek. We're all kind of proud:)

Would you mind if I asked you a vet question...just one:)?

I've gotten two differnt opinions on this from vets and just wondering what your thought is.

Would an under active thyroid cause a horse to not sweat properly?

An older vet told me no a younger one told me yes, the younger one said the older vets are all having trouble believeing that the thyroid can cause so much problems.

That would be the Modern Pentathlon. Used to be called the Military Pentathlon.

The idea is to test skills that an old-fashioned Army officer would have to have - shoot, fence, swim, run, and ride.

Usually what you've got in this sport is good swimmers and runners who usually can shoot, but the fencing and the riding are fighting for last place.

When I was in college, we had a guy training for this at our barn. He was an AWFUL rider! Just laughable.

I actually thought about training for this, but I have the opposite problem - I'm a good fencer (fenced for my college) and of course I can ride rings around all those guys, but I am a slow swimmer though technically correct and strong in the water (have my BSA lifeguard cert) and as a runner I'm a total bust - I can hike forever but running, forget it.

Isn't it funny how people are different?

I am full of confidence in the arena - I will jump stuff in there that would give me the big eye in the hunting field. When you're tearing down a narrow path on a hillside and get to a muddy creek bottom and a large coop rears up in front of you . . . somehow it looks twice the size it would in the ring!

The funny thing is I've never been dumped in an arena. Every fall I've taken has been on trail

Farrier here, see you all later.

here is the BBC report on the Modern Pentathlon. It fills you in a little bit on the rules.

I wouldn't run 3 km even IF somebody was chasing me.

You draw your horse out of a hat. The college equestrian circuit works the same way. You have 15 minutes to warm up your horse and figure out what makes him tick. I got some real crazies on the circuit . . . particularly the Anglo-Arab that West Point brought to one show, I half-halted her every five seconds all the way through the jump course and she finally settled down - I found out later she had bucked 3 people off before I got her for the hunter course. The poor horses don't have much confidence in the strange rider, either!

Thanks for the heads up! I really appreciate it. I couldn't figure out what was up! These were big four foot fences, it was a tough course, but the lack of skill demonstrated was amazing.
...but I have the opposite problem Same here. I can shoot (in theory) ride, and fence, I'm a pretty strong swimmer, but I'm been compared to a sick ostrich when I run... :-p
