The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

They look great. I've got some pictures of my garden, but it will be later before I post. I think we're going to run to town to get something to eat.

I've got JP this evening. Charlie is sick and Kristy went barrel racing. I'll take him home when it's his bed time.

I've been down to Jenny's to hold horses for the farrier. I took rusty with me. Today when I was riding him, he seemed so gimpy that I thought he must have a rock. When I checked I thought his foot looked funny. I've never seen a foundered foot before, but it looked to me like that might be the problem. I was sick. I couldn't imagine when or why he would have foundered. Anyway my shoer, same oneJenny is using said it wasn't founder just that with the funny weather we've had, wet, dry, wet, dry, horses feet were doing fnny things He trimmed him a little and said he was fine. He is going to shoe him Fri. morn.

What a scare to think he had foundered. Glad it was not so, and hope he is sound after shoeing on Fri.

I couldn't figure out how he had done it so fast. I groomed him up some feet, bridle pad, etc. last week when I was getting Harley ready to go. I didn't notice anything then. The farrier said he was pretty long in his toe and it was just wearing funny because of the weather probably.

Look at that post # :)

The farrier also told me about a horse for sale:) He use to bull dog but got out of it a few years back. But he said this horse almost made him want to buy another horse, it is so pretty. A 3 yr old buckskin. Green broke. I'm thinking about going to look for him. They are asking a little more then I want to give for a resale horse, but not too much that I couldn't get it back, so I'm not sure. Probably just need to go look:)

You have a new farrier? The "roller blade" boots didn't work out?

Heck yeah I'm watching the Olympics. :-) I caught myself more than once squirming in my seat willing a horse over the jump, or tapping my foot in rhythm to the horse's canter. Some of those horses were careening around that course! Especially a small black horse. The commentator described him as "scampering around the course" which is exactly what I was thinking, and it made me laugh out loud. Some phenomenal and not so phenomenal performances. I also watched it this morning, and there was an elimination, and one rider from Spain ended up with an HUGE amount of faults. Well over 30, I think.

What is bull dogging? I've heard of it, but have never been able to figure out what it is. :-p

I've watched most of the dressage! First time it's been televised this well, I hope you've been able to catch it too. Heads up that tomorrow morning is the individual gold medal round 7-10 am on Bravo..... 15 finalists in musical freestyle for the final round. They come into the final with a combined score from their team dressage score and another dressage test yesterday.

I caught the first couple of days of it. One of my professors just came back from Athens. Imagine... she said that she sat outside for eight hours at every event. And she bought lots of Olympic equestrian wear.

I didn't want to ask this and get teased on the poor horses thread but do the shoes conduct electricity. I just assumed they were some kind of heavy duty aluminum. Do shoes put them at risk during storms?. Just wondering. Baby getting a new pair tomorrow.

They shouldn't Cindy. That was such a freak event. I don't know why acres of ground could be so charged.

That was a great finish! I've never seen a team just ~concede~ in a jump off.... US gets the silver... Germany a clear Gold.

No the boots didn't work out. Wouldn't stay on. I just don't think many people ride as much as I do in this type of terrain. When they got wet they were very heavy, and rubbed some too.

I called the guy that shoed for me for 7 years that I got mad at for not returning calls. We talked, and he laughed, and I said I wouldn't count on him getting messages I would just keep his phone ringing till HE answered it:)

I'm sorry I've got to go back to the expense, but I think that's just part of riding you can't get away from.

Bulldogging is where a steer with long horns is turned out of a shoot running, a cowboy follows beside it and when in the right postion kind of slides off the horse (full gallop) holding the horns of the cow. The cowboy has his feet out in front of him digging into the ground, brings the cow to a stop and them pulls the cow over on it's side by twisting its head around with the horns.

Welcome to the right thread!

You weren't the only one confused... I meant to post the whole cat eye-thing post here, and I posted it there by mistake. I had already posted it there. ;~D

At least we didn't accidently post our stuff on some breaking news thread.

I'm having coyote trouble again. I don't know how many chickens I have because I have so many now, so I 'm not sure if I'm looseing them. But I've got a coyote hanging around.

Yesterday while I was feeding some chickens came flying around the end of the barn squawking, I look up and there the coyote stood, not 10 ft from me. He just looked at me. I had a coffee can in my hand so I flung it at him and he just turn and walked off. Grizzly was standing there watching I said go get him Griz, and Grizzly took off like a bullet. Chased him clear out of sight.

This morning I heard the chickens squawking and the Nikki was barking. Grizzly was running around like he was looking at something behind the barn. Funny he doesn't bark, the girl I got him from says they don't bark much. Catahoulas.
