The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I've seen some very small kids at rodeos that scare me to death.

One time at a Jr. Rodeo this kid, I don't think he was more then 8, was running flags on his dads roping horse. He went around the barrel hanging off the side of the horse at a dead run to reach out and grab the flag. I was sitting across the arena in a direct line from the announcer. I was going OH, OH, OH!!!. Once the kid had the flag he kicked the horse into an even faster run, the horse just charged on, the kid laid almost flat on his back, yelled Hee Haw and flew back across the timer and won the event. The announcer said, Hey mom in the stands, don't worry about this kid, they don't call him Mr. Excitment for nothing:). He was talking to me.

I don't reccommend that sort of thing with kids, but when you see one that can do it, it's pretty awsome.

The petunias are just now gorgeous again! I'll take a picture this afternoon!

Take a picture of your garden today... And the tree.... You know, that tree might still be small enough to move if you really aren't going to like it getting big.

The kid that owned my pony before they gave up is like that. Just like his mother, very athletic and no fear.

Around here, I used to be amazed and embarrassed about the really little kids snow skiing. While I lay on the mountain trying to muster the strength to get up ~again~ these little kids would zip by, straight down the mountain.

Would this be a good time to move it?

I guess it would be OK where it is at it I keep pruning the bottom so I get a clear view under it. Know what I mean? The top spreading out would give nice shade, I just don't want it being so full at the bottom. I'll take some pictures later when I get back from my ride. I think Trash is almost done.

I know what you mean. That's how I feel watching young kids do the speed events. I've been riding 18 years and don't have that much courage. Oh well, maybe someday.

Little kids a rodeos scare the heck out of me too. So do some of the little kids on the bigger horses in some of the jumping classes at shows. My favorites are the lead line kids, though. They're really cute.

I love watching the Jr. Rodeos. I just think some of the parents are silly for putting the kids on such big horses, especially the little girls on their mothers barrel horses. Alot of the barrel horses around here are loony because all they get to do is run barrels.

You watching the jumping now on the Olympics? I can't believe how high those jumps are.

Jumping isn't on here yet.... (don't tell me who wins!)... we watched the prelim yesterday, I am sure they are taller today.

I lost my nerve jumping, not because of the up-side, but because of the downside, if that makes sense, riding forward as the horse comes up didn't scare me. I started to become afraid when the horse felt like it was coming down so steep it would go over front ways. It never happened, and I've never seen it happen, but it was an un-nerving fear for me. I was jumping about 4 feet then. These guys are jumping over 5 feet. And wide too.

Here's what my petunias came back to as of today.... They look great again! A little soggy because it's been pouring out, but they came back real thick. If they get leggy again, I'll cut them way back again, up till the frost.

Here's what I cut them back to July 24

Gee, it looks like the horse just lifts up. My son use to jump an Arab we had for fun. He jumped him about 4ft. In an Austrailan Stock saddle.
