The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I told the lady I delivered Harley too, Kim, about taking him to Robbers Cave. She said she had been there once, but didn't like it because of all the rocks:). She asked if I kept him in one of the stalls???? Did you know they had stalls there? Where are they?

She said she would not keep a horse tied to a pole:). Her horses were city horses. Harleys going to think he fell in a tub of butter there you know....that or get bored stiff:(

I love horses but have never owned one. I don't have space for one where I live. I would love to have my own horse and am curious about stables. Have any of you ever kept a horse in a stable? How much did it cost per month and what is life like for a boarded horse?

exactly 2 1/2 hours to make the trip with light traffic. It is around 175 miles.

That's pretty good. Took me 2 hours to do 90 miles in the RV:)

I checked with my vet and he recommended which stable he felt was the best. I kept mine in a stall at first. (I'm in Texas) It was 330 dollars a month. That included his stall, feed, hay and use of the grounds. I now have mine pastured. It's 180 a month, feed included. I live in the city also and my husband and I travel a lot so I can't be out there everyday and it's reassuring to know that he is watched and cared for. Stables usually offer lessons too and will help you with equipment and maybe even have horses for sale.

I'm looking for my own place though because they are like potato chips. One not enough:')

I would pasture one as soon as possible though. Mine was turned out every day but still had too much energy built up.

I would imagine the cost of boarding depend some on where you live and how high-falutin' you want the place to be.

Here, boarding will range from a fairly affordable self-care deal you could make with a farm nearby, to full care at a stable where it would cost from $150 to $350 depending on your area, the facilities they have available and how much you want to spend.

I would check around for lessons at a place, would let you get into the horse thing, try out a few people till you find a trainer and a stable you like that fits your style and what you want to do. Someone learning to ride because they'd like to ride trails in the woods will want different lessons than someone who wants to show. There is a type of horse for everyone.... If you find a good trainer to take lessons from, they can be a fabulous resource for helping you find the right horse when you decide to buy.

Welcome to the thread, feel free to just read along and join in.... we are all different types here, my husband ecurbh is really new to riding, he didn't know he wanted a horse till he met me! We keep ours at home, I rent a place with 7 acres in Washington.

Billy Goat Tavern:).

Yep, the local establishment made famous by the old Saturday Night Live skit. And a good burger, I might add.

Has she met your children yet?

No, it's way premature for that. First I need to see how compatible we are. I'm not rushing into anything. I wouldn't introduce anyone to my kids unless I was very sure we were going to be together. Even then, I would introduce the person as a friend, avoid any displays of affection in front of them, and see how they respond to her. The kids are the most important priority.

Seriously, though, I did and will continue to do so. Makes more sense than paying for a hotel. But I'm not going to rush into anything. That, I've learned from experience, is a big mistake. I mean, it's supposed to make you feel "bonded" with the other person. And I don't want to "bond" with someone who may or may not be right for me. We need to get to know each other, and see if it is a good match. Stupid "intimacy" makes people do stupid things.

I never did ride Rusty this evening.

When I was unloading Harley at the stable today we had a little problem. He had peed in the trailer, while backing out he slipped and one of his back feet kicked me in the ankle. It hurt, but I thought it was one of those things that would hurt for a few minutes then be OK. I never mentioned it to anyone there. Well, it's really hurting now, bruising, and swelling some. I don't think it's anything more then a bruise really, but it's hurting enough that I don't feel like riding tongiht. It will probably be fine by morning:) Has to be, I HAVE to ride Trash.

Ouch.. Do you have a Ace or some kind of pressure bandage? Ice and a bandage through the night and even tomorrow will keep it from swelling too much.

I think I have an ice pack. Might try that. I can't believe this happened. It was no one's fault. His back leg just slipped forward and he got me right on the back of the ankle bone.
