The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Thanks. I'll tell you all all about it tonight. Like you said I'm sure most of all this in most cases is unnecessary. I've been to this place, It looks well run.

I had about 3 pages of releases that I had to sign with Okie that they were not responsible for ANY injuries or illness, that he was up to date on his immz,, neg coggins, and that he would get foot care every 6 weeks and that he could be treated by their house vet in an Er or I failed to do so.

Then I had to sign a financial agreement. You might want to really look at this one if you don't know the buyer well. If I don't pay by the tenth it goes into big time late fees and they can put a lein on the horse and I can't remove him until all charges ,including legal fees paid. The owner tells me that she has people come in and stable horses and then she never sees them again and claims and re-sells them.

LOL...another angle to worry about.

CS's husband said I need for them to sign something that states I'm not responsible for anyone that gets hurt on him.

This is getting more and more involved as I go:)

It is because there are three parties instead of two.

Do you have your own lawyer you could call and just run it by him? As you say everything will probably be fine and you don't want to alienate future clients that may bring you in business but to me, you seem to be taking all the risks. The buyer could back out and the boarder has to cover herself financially and liability wise.

The good news is that if you get Harley back you will have a jumper though:')

Harley proved himself a champ again:). I was so proud of him. He got out of the trailer, and the lady said is it alright if we just go ahead and tack him up. It might be that you could just take him back home.

He did wonderfully, and they could not believe how nice he was. He walked, trotted, cantered in both leads, didn't spook, and there was plenty to spook at.

The lady said we don't get many expensive nice horses in here like this:).

She said the little girl could handle him right now, but that she was glad they were going to leave him with her for 3-4 months for training. She anticipates no problems with getting him to jump. He will be kept by himself till the deal is final, and she said that would probably be 2 weeks, maybe 3. As I was leaving she asked if I had anymore, or if I ever get another to let her know. She said she could sell that kind of horse anytime.

When I told her how much I ride him she said, I couldn't do that:). I don't understand why people don't get that the only thing that makes good horses and riders is ~riding~ not 20 minutes of training in an arena.

Oh, and something else she told me about the people who want to buy him. The mother rides alot and is good at it, they have other horses and take very very good care of them. Once they buy one they keep it forever and the little girl is a very nice kid, her exact words, she's not a brat like some kids:)

So it sounds like it would be a perfect home for him.

The paper I filled out was just some health questions that the insurance company needs. She said she would take full responsibilty for him if the other peoples insureance didn't work.

I really got a good feel for the place and the lady, so I didn't press anything.

Very glad to hear it went well and that he did so well for her when she tried him out!

Sounds like it's just a matter of time till it's a done deal and a good home.

Yeah the good home is nice. I had a pictures of some bratty little rich kid, but she sounds like a good one:)

I'm thinking a matter of time too. I hope I can get to meet these people and that the stable lady is not always the go between.

I'll be able to keep up with when he goes to a show from Heather. I told the lady I'd like to come watch sometime. I plan on running over there sometime and hope to catch her riding him.

Very good! And Heather has ridden him quite a bit also right? So she has her own reasons to keep an eye out!

I am glad it worked out well and you feel good about it.

Did you ride Rusty today?

It's almost 5 here and still over 100. I'm going to stay a little later and finish some stuff up. It's too hot to ride right now.

We've set four or five record lows already this month. It got down to 41 degrees early Saturday morning. My mom's husband works seasonally up in northern Wisconsin. He said they had frost three days last week.

I wasn't here, though, for that record low. I went down to Chicago for the weekend to visit my friend. :o)

Friday was my birthday. I came in to the office in the morning and had bagels and donuts in my honor. :o) Worked 1/2 day, and took the afternoon off. I headed down to Chicago around 2:00, but got detoured due to a major accident by the Butte des Morts bridge in Oshkosh. The driver of a semi apparently had a medical problem or fell asleep at the wheel. The truck crossed the median and both lanes of traffic on the other side before going off the bridge and into the lake. Hwy 41 was closed in both directions for over five hours! My detour put me in Milwaukee for early rush hour, so I didn't get to Stacy's until 5:30. When I arrived, she greeted me with a balloon bouquet (awww...). Stacy owns a condominium in Deerfield, within walking distance of a "city center" plaza with lots of restaurants and shops. She took me out for dinner to a wonderful restaurant for my birthday. After, we went back to her place, and I showed her the video I had made of Adrienne's birthday party, as well as of my house and the kids playing the weekend before. We then watched the movie "Before Sunrise". Stacy wants to see the sequel, but had never seen the original, and I have it on VHS, so I brought it down with me.

Being the honorable gentleman that I am :o), I slept on the couch. We got up around 6:30 Saturday, had coffee and got ready for the day. We left around 8:30 and walked down to the plaza. Every Saturday morning during the summer through October they have a farmers' market. We browsed a bit and picked up some breakfast from one of the bakery vendors. We caught the 9:25 train downtown. We walked from Union Station to Millennium Park, just north of the Art Institute. After hanging out there for a while, we walked down to the lakeshore and north to Navy Pier. We had a "cheezborger" from Billy Goat Tavern, and then walked down to the end of the pier to watch the air show. The venue for the show technically is North Beach, but we could see it very well from Navy Pier. After watching the show for an hour or so, we caught a trolley to Michigan Ave., and browsed a few stores and an art museum. When it was time to head back, we walked back to Union Station to catch the 4:35 train. After getting back to Stacy's, she called some friends we were planning on meeting for dinner, and they came over. We had a drink, talked for a while, and then went out to eat. Afterwards, we caught the late showing of the movie "Collateral", with Tom Cruise. We got back to her place around 12:30 a.m. It was a full day! But it was soooooo beautiful outside -- clear, deep blue sky, dry, a light breeze, and low 70's -- a gorgeous day to spend outdoors!

We slept in Sunday morning, and just relaxed when we got up, read the newspaper and talked. Stacy made me breakfast. :o) Around 11:00 we drove to her school so she could give me the tour. Students were reporting today, so the school was open over the weekend so teachers could finish any last-minute preparation. There were a few other teachers there, so I had the chance to meet more of her friends. Nice place! Afterwards, we drove out to an art fair in Long Grove, and I found a few things for my house. I left at 3:20 p.m. to head back to Appleton, and got home at 5:50, exactly 2 1/2 hours to make the trip with light traffic. It is around 175 miles.

I have the kids Thursday through Sunday this week. Stacy and I are planning to get together next over the Labor Day weekend. I'm also invited to come down for dinner for Rosh Hashanah at her mom's on September 16th. Stacy's grandfather will be in town from Buffalo, so I'll get the chance to meet him, too.
