Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Too bad about Trash, you're prolly right. Your day sounds good... I hope you feel good about taking Harley to the new place, I am way too overprotective to ever be in the horse selling business. I bond with all of them.... even my pony, for the wrong reasons. ;~D

Well I haven't wanted to admit how much I like him, but I bought him to sell so I have to stick to the plan. It will also be rewarding to reach the goal I set (and the profit won't hurt) Especially if I'm riding for other people I won't have time to keep up with 2 of my own. I also think how wonderful he will be for this little girl:) He just looks like a little girls horse. But I may also be counting my chickens before they are hatched:). They haven't bought him yet.

Just talked to the lady. I will deliver Harley at 1:00 today. I feel pretty good about how this lady will handle the situation. She said she was going to ride him for a few weeks before they even think of putting the kid on him.

She also said she has a school horse that the kid rides. They go out in the pasture to do jumps and this horse has taken off with the kid a few times and she handles it just fine.....oh my....I can't imagine having to sit and watch that...Harley will be a piece of cake.

LOL...I wondered if when Trash saw Tami pull up with the trailer full of her other horses if he knew what was up. Maybe trail riding isn't so bad after all he was thinking. Tami is a pretty much "whup and ride" type rider.

She said she was going to ride him for a few weeks before they even think of putting the kid on him.

I hope you can go watch sometime, and maybe when the child rides..... and of course bring the camera. ;~D

I tried to keep in mind this weekend that a short person may be riding him soon and made him stand next to rocks and things when I mounted. He just did everything so wonderful.

Do I really want to let him go:(

I think once I get Rusty going again good, I won't miss him so much:)

She also said they have insurance forms that they need me to help answer a few questions about and to give me??? Do you know if this will be to insure the horse, or for the kid in case of injury??

It would be good to pay attention to that.

It is probably insurance for her stable. She may want to be not held liable for natural or normal injury or death of the horse. She is always on the hook for her own negligence, agreement or not, but it may be similar to the agreement you'd sign if you were boarding the horse.

So I probably need to get the people that are looking at him to sign something that states they will pay me the selling price/vet bills, whatever if the horse is not in the same condition as when I delivered him???

It will probably have language in it that says she is not responsible for anything. It will sound scary, but remember that no 'hold-harmless' agreement releases anyone from liability for negligence.

I would say that as the owner of a stable that often has a lot of valuable horses in it, she's insured to cover lots of types of liability to animals and people on her place.

I would say that it would be very good to know if your trial agreement is actually with ~her~ or with the parents of the child. It might be really fuzzy in a circumstance like this. I would have some ~direct~ conversation with the parents of the kid too, make sure you are all on the same page on what you expect and what you will hold them responsible for, and make sure there aren't different understandings between the three of you.

Lawyers and insurance companies always complicate good handshake agreements between people. Most of the time, all this scary talk was never necessary.

I don't even like talking about all this. I guess I superstitious. But if you don't plan for the worst, it won't happen:). I asked the father when I talked to him who would be responsible and he didn't hesitate at all to say he was. That made me feel better. If the horse died it would be more clear cut, but injuries like lameness is what worries me. It would be so easy to say it was something that was wrong with him before they got him so they're not responsible???? I have a feeling they will have him vet checked from stuff that has been said. I told him I had had my vet check him over when I had the coggins done and he said the horse was fine. I know my vet would verify that if needed.

These insurance companies try to cover every circumstance that might take place that puts her place and your horse and someone else's child in court. And they never ensure that court is avoided, they only guarantee that court will be needed to sort if all out!

...Your escaped horse that busts through a fence, into the road and injures someone. She's liable to reasonably fence and maintain her own fences and keep control of the horses in her care. She's liable up to her ears in that circumstance, in in a serious accident could lose her place without good insurance. But her insurance company will try to have enough language in it that if your horse does something ~unreasonable~ you are at least named in the suit... and the insurance company will try to dump their support of her if ~she~ did anything unreasonable. as will the parents of the kid, if they are the actual lessees.

You're right. Your biggest concern is not the major catastrophy..... it's the less cut and dried event like another horse that gets in with him and cuts his leg causing a lameness that lasts a month or two recovery or worse, and at the same time they decide they don't want him. I think you are reasonable to expect some compensation for the loss of his useful time in addition to just the vet bills, but you might end up in small claims court to get it.

Good luck with it, I hope the trip over goes smoothly and I didn't make you more nervous than you were... I'd be interested in the agreement because I have my plans to run a boarding stable one day not too far away, so I've looked into it some and like to get informed.

Everything will be fine.... most of it probably has to do with immunizations and such!
