The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Just a few more:)

This is CS today at the end of our last ride today. Right behind her is a straight off drop way way way down. I wouldn't get that close:)

Navigateing the trails is easy once you understand how they work. Riders follow yellow spots on trees and hikers blue spots. Then the trails are numbered with plastic markers with numbers or letters. Letters are usually junction points.

Then here is the sign for the Bad Girls:

That's pretty much a recap of my weekend. CS will post some when she gets them.

the trail is big enough for the horses to walk and that is about it. some were about 12 inches wide, some were wider depending on where you were at on the trail, most of the time you stay on the trail because you really don't want to go down the side.

Great! So did you have to actually work much or was it mostly fun?

The horses can pick through there just fine. Let them have their head so they can see where they are going, they'll find the best path.

It was very very narrow. And it was death on one side if they slipped. That was a scary trail. It was funny that we did it twice on Fri going in one direction. It was scary but not too bad. But on Sat we went down it from the other direction and we both thought we were on a different trail, and it was a whole lot scarier. You see alot more going in the one direction then the other. But we went back and did it again today to get pictures.

There is a good mix of trees. Some firs. There is lots and lots of deadfall becasue a few winters back they had a really bad ice storm there and alot of trees broke off. Even now there are lots that have grown in a curve.

They can go thru 12 inches? I just wondered because in the picture the rocks looked so close. Here in the desert the closest to a hill is the low ditches :') It's kind of cool to ride thru cornfields though.

The trail that they have adopted had no trash and only one tree that needed trimming, so we just got to have fun:)

I see that there are some long needle pines too, and the larger trunks look like firs...

Gorgeous and green there... I have to admit, I pictured Oklahoma as flatter and more open grassland type terrain! And I wouldn't have predicted rocky! It's a pretty place!

I think western OK, is flat and boring, but this is in east OK. This is the edge of the Kiameche mountains that run from Ark.

My son getting married at Big Bend National park in Sept. I plan to check out the trails (on foot)for maybe future use and was reading about the horse trails. The watch out for "quick sand" kind of startled me though:')

CS and I talked about that. We don't think one would deliberatly go off a cliff, but if they spooked they might just by accident..???
