The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Do you ride them the same way as a horse?

JJ looking at the pictures with me. He's facinated with horses. Sometimes I'll just set up york and he will just go back and forth looking at Okie.

That ole lady is a tough one.... after a long trail ride a bareback pad would feel pretty thin on the old bottom.

These next pictures are of some of the people in thier costumes. They did this Sat night. There was a pot luck dinner (tons of great food), some games, and a costume contest. I think they were suppose to dress in some kind of western get up. These women are crazy. Oh and I do have trail pictures to, but these are pretty funny when you think of a bunch of women out without any men acting silly.

Dispatch Rider:

Once while we were eating a tractor pulling a trailer and passengers went down the road, and one lady ran out shooting her cap gun.

Yeah, I was wondering if that was live electric fencing, or just a spoof. Spoofing works too. :-)

This may sound really stupid, but all I can think of is Black Beauty. Horse auctions go straight to my heart, they really do.

Are you talking about the actual cannon bone? Are you talking about the upper or lower part of the leg? Because if you're talking about the upper part, are you talking about the stifle? We had a TB that used to lock his stifle up all the time. It moved all over the place. That could be it, if it's what I'm thinking. He used to kick really hard to get it unlocked.

Because of, or in spite of the men not being there? ;~D I am sure the men were pretty happy to have not had to endure it! Looks like a lot of fun.

When we go to my BILs , he and my husband want to go looking around. It makes me sad though. Not all but a lot of the horse just have a kind of hopeless, dull look in their eyes and I just hope they get sold to good homes. Then the sells. The saddest part to me. The one's that aren't cute sometimes hard to sell and it's like they aren't worth anything. I spend the time studying the horses or reading until the guys ready to go.

I'm told I will like the next one though but not the price:') We will see. I think when I get stinking rich we ought spend some of that RV money on an adoption ranch though:')

At the auction around here, the ones they run through at the end are all meat horses, bought by the same guy who buys up everything left for a few hundred dollars.

I can't stand the place, it breaks my heart, and I would go broke if I went again.

Maybe. I'm talking about his upper back right leg. When he raised his foot it was like a bone pushing under the skin towards his front leg. When he stepped down you could see muscle and it moving back vertical from horizontal. This sounds like what you descibe. What's the purpose and why would it do that?

Now for some trail pictures:)

An obstacle

This picture gives you an idea of how steep the drop off on one side was on this one hill we climbed.

I turned to take a picture of CS once and caught her taking me:)

CS taking a picture at the bottom of the steep hill

CS and I rode on a trail called a switchback. It zigzagged up a steep hill. This is her on a switchback below me.

This is at the bottom of the switchback trail

This is at the top of the switchback.

Some of these horses go for a couple of hundred. Colts less. The highest I have seen is around 750. I hope none of then feed. I don't think so though caz about half go back because the bid too low and the seller pulls them. There are lots of packs of 3. Momma PG, and baby following her around. It was sad last night because, I know they eventually have to seperate but they couldn't get enough as a package and split them up to different sellers. I didn't like that.

If I ever know a nice person who sold a horse at auction, I might have to fidget a little, but I really think it is the quick way out for owners that really don't give a crap what happens to their animals. I refuse to go. Like I said, I'd go broke.

Neat trail pics! - I am glad you remembered the camera! Is it mostly a deciduous forest that is bare in winter? - or are there firs and pines as well?
