The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

What a great facility, and I am impressed with how alone you seem there. Were you just early or did you always have that much open space around you and nice views?

The princess-plan dog in the chair is just precious.

I thought you guys would find this interesting. This is a mounting block for the handicap. They have a cement pad too for handicap parking with horses, I guess so a wheel chair would not get stuck in mud. It's hard to see in the picture but at the top there is an opening in the railing where the person mounting sits/stands someone lead the horse up, therre is a rail at the side that keeps the horse from moving away from the person mounting.

Some of our neighboring horses.

Who does this look like:)

This is a view looking down one end of the park at all the horses. This is really only maybe 1/4 of the horse camp ground:

This is one of the nicest camp ground in the area.

The site we lucked out getting is the only one that is set by itsefl like that. The rest are pretty tight at you can see from some of the rest of the pictures.

We just lucked out and got the only site that is so open. The rest are pretty tight. The sites behind the picture of the handicap mounting block are situated on "U" shaped road. All around it, then on the other side of our camp, their lined up down a straigth road with tie post behind/between sites.

Huge, lovely camp. Our horse camps look more closed in, like the shot with the Rusty lookalike... But small.... 8-10 campspots total in each of the different camps.

We have those handicapped access ramps here, the one at our state forest is built-in, wood retaining walls with a gravel ramp up and gravel level at the top.

The funny incident on our last ride was that I use them to get up, I often do... I'll walk over, climb up on it, get Bay aligned and slide on. The funny part is that I climbed up there and gave Bay a tug that ~meant~ "move up along side here, OK?" and Bay misunderstood and climbed right up on the thing after me. He thought he was supposed to follow me! The deck on it was 3 feet high, and he got both front feet up before I stopped him and backed him off. I guess I know he would follow me anywhere. ;~D

The picture below is a better one of the "roped off area". This is actually hot wire. The posts are step in posts, designed for trail riders. I took this picture to show you guys this. I think these would be great for a longer trip. Would be alot of work for just a day or two ride. It really doesn't hurt to tie to post:)

You either use a solar power pack or car battery. I sure get the horse use to it at home inside his regular fencing. That small of an area might be a problem when you first introduce it. The horses here seemed very comfortable in them. Quite of few people were using them this weekend

I like the look of those electric fences too... Seen them in use. the step in posts really work best as support along the runs with trees as corners. The step-in's as corners aren't very sturdy. I wish they were taller, I'd get taller ones and run three wires. I am not sure they'd hold a spooked horse, but those'll hold an easy to hold one.

The lady in the front in this picture, riding bareback pad, is 76!!! She just is getting in from a 4 hour ride!!!!

I'm going to load some more pictures from another disc. Am I posting too many and slowing your computers down too much?

The lady is riding a bareback pad. It has a cinch, but no stirrups. It's just a pad.
