Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Go with your gut on those, the sellers will tell you whatever you want to hear, in the face of the truth you could see for yourself.
Auctions are a risky place to get a horse, they are the sad dumping ground of a lot of the broken and injured. I wouldn't mind going there to find the good soul who needs saving, but I would know I was taking a risk. The pony I have was bought at auction. She looked good and a child rode her in the ring. When the tranquilizers wore off at home, she was not the child's mount she was promised to be.
We are going to a differnt kind labor day weekend. All QH/Paints. A breeder that is a friend of My BILs has her eye on a mare coming up and we can go and she will help us "look". Are these more dependable or should you stay away from all of them.
Oh, and I got a trailor. It's a 3 horse slant utility. Nothing fancy but clean and very little rust. The only problem is that it's RED!:'(
Really all I'm doing now is trying to learn. I was drawing imaginary lines on all the horses.:')
When's Becky and CS coming back. I want to hear about the trail ride:')
I don't know if they are better. I've never been to a real quality auctions, only those where people go to dump horses quick.
I would look at ads in the paper, flyers, or Horse Trader magazines, with buyers willing to spend a few weeks or months to sell a horse and who will show the horse to you, demonstrate what he knows, let you ride in a relaxed setting at their home, and who might give a darn where they end up.
Not sure, I would guess she'd be back by this evening.
I'mmmmmm baaaaaccccckkkkkk.
It was great, I don't know where to start. I have 90 pictures:), don't worry I won't post them all.
I've been to this place lots of times but was always following others so I didn't know the trails. I got hold of a map this weekend, YYYYEEEAAAAAAAHHHHHH. I was able to follow it too. So now I don't have to wait to go with someone who know s their way around. It's alot of open country in what is known as mountains around here, but probably only hills.
It may be awhile till I get pictures up, Mack is using his desk. But here;s a few stories:)
There was probably 100 ladies there that belonged to this group. There were other people there, too, so the camp was full. We got there Thrus kinda of late so didn't get to ride that day. Not many of the ladies there actually rode too much, CS and I did about 10 hours total. We went out twice a day. Only on Fri. did we ride with other people. Sat. the group was so slow getting started that we left without them and did 3 hours got back and found they had only rode for maybe 1 1/2 hours.
I think CS is going to scan her map to show you the trails. Probably won't mean much to you but it will give you an idea.
CS knows a bunch of these people. One of her friends, we heard by cell phone, was leaving her house to come. Horse trailer hooked up and everything. The trailer came loose from the truck and rolled back down a hill hit a ditch and flipped end over end twice before comeing to rest on its side. It was a two horse straight load. One horse was standing up when she got to it, on the other horse, it came out when she got the door open. It took the fire department 2 1/2 hours to cut the other one out. A vet came and sedateded it because it was getting desperate, the firemen landed up cutting it out with the jaws of life. It suffered some bad cuts but walked away. Proabably be pretty sore for a long time. The lady loaded the one that came out on it's own and came on. She didn't get to ride him tho, because by the next day his knee was swollen.
CS and I had a rough start too:) We left here and were talking and I was concentrating so hard on driving the RV and trailer that we went right past some signs that said "Road Closed". These roads were open last week, they're in our neighborhood:), the ones that let out on the highway. Of course we get to the highway where the work was and couldn't get out. I has 1/2 mile from any place to turn around so I started backing. I called Mack. I was about half way back when he got there and he finished up for me. I was doing it but he did it alot faster. It was hard to back because you can't see the trailer behind the RV in the mirrors, which is how I always do it. By the time you can see it your screwed and have to go back forward a bit to straighten it. But he got us turned around and that was the only mishap. Other then that it was not hard to drive at all. I'm ready to go every weekend.
I'll tell you more when I start posting pictures. It was great, wish all of you could be there.
Becky
Wow! such stories.... the horse trailer accident left me with chills. My biggest fear, I have seen such accidents on TV rescue shows, and imagined them too.
Glad your ride went well and it was a good weekend. Not too much rain? - It didn't get mention anyway with all the other news. A friend and I have been in the same situation on a dead end with no room to turn around. frustrating indeed!
I really look forward to as many pics as you'll post, and the map!
His tail is there, it's just wrapped tight in white wrap.
It rained on us for only part of the way there then stopped. The weather the whole weekend could not have been better. Today was the hottest and it wasn't bad.
Becky
Glad for the good weather then!
~taps fingers~
Waiting for pics! :~D
Yeah I know. I did think I was looking at something else at first though:') Why wrap it like that? Just because?
Ok, I've got the computer now, I'll start posting some, be patient tho, I've got to go thru them and see which ones to post.
Becky
I'm with Hair on the chills about the trailer. Glad the horses ok.
I was talking with Eddie about this just today. When I was about 8 or 9 I was riding in a truck with my dad and we were pulling my two horses. I don't remember loading them or where we were going or what type of trailer we had but it was late at night and I woke up and my dad was trying to get control of the truck and the trailer was swaying back and forth and then I saw it turn over. I remember screaming at my dad that my horses were dead. My dad never has been patient if we get emotional but it must have really shook him up because he gently turned me around and pointed and said "no they aren't . look" Both were in the grass standing to the side. They were banged up but ok. I remember lots of people around getting the trailer back up and helping my dad. It was scary. I was constantly stopping to check the ball and safety latch , coming home with Okie.. Maybe this was why. I hadn't thought about this in awhile.

You had horses as a kid and that happened to you?
I got two horses when I was 8. From an auction:') We didn't have a trailer then so my dad and I rode them home. I thought I was hot stuff. A real cowgirl:')
This is CS sitting in front of the RV and trailer in our campsite Fri. morning.
The horses tied to their posts. Did I mention that Harley acted like a seasoned trail horse. He stood tied to his post for 3 nights, he ate, drank, went down the trails, everything with no fuss. He was great.
Miss "Q" , Susie:)She's a great companion on a camping trip.
