Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
How was the job?
Sounds like your riding is coming along great:)
Rusty finished his antibiotics. The vet came and drew blood for the blood work. She actually aready called to give me the results. He as no more infection of any kind, white blood cell count normal. He does have an underactive thyroid, which is probably the cause of the no sweating, no ulcers. She is going to bring me a supplement that will cost $20 for about a 6 month supply. That's not to bad. I gather he will have to be on it for ever. We will also have to run another blood work to make sure we have the dosage right, as and over active is as bad as under active thyroid.
She finally got my bill figured. The total thing for last Fri.'s emergency visit and treatment of colic, the coggins on Rocky and yesterdays blood work on Rusty was $325. What was the bill on Bay's colic treatment??

Sorry, I just read your post about the job on the HH:(. No need to rehash it here. I'm sorry it isn't going to work out...but in one way it's a good thing you found out so quick that it isn't for you. Won't be wasting any more of your time.

I'm not sure I will be going to look at that horse this afternoon after all. We have had a major wave of vehicle breakdowns here. My truck is having battery trouble, and is iffy about starting so I'm not taking it anywhere till Mack can work on it. I got stuck in town the other day. So now I wont' drive it as I'm afraid it will quit again.
Also our work truck died yesterday, totally and completely, which is really major. It's a one ton duelie desiel, that we just put 4 new tires on, a $300 radiator and a new water pump:) Because the work truck is no more, my son is having to use his truck to work out of, and Mack is haveing to go with his truck to jobs also leaving me and my daughter in law truckless:). She was going to go with me. Why does this stuff happen all at the same time.
I didn't get my feed yesterday and am out this morning. I was hoping to catch Mack before he got out of here and have him take my truck (if it stops on him he's more able to get it going), so I could go to the feed store. But he got out of here this morning without me even hearing him leave. He's going to meet me at the feed because he doesn't have a check to pay for it, so I have to take him one. (if my truck will start, not only battery trouble, but, it's a bronco, the back electric window stopped working day before yesterday, so I can't get it down to load feed into so even if the truck starts I can't get feed in it). He'll bring the feed home and then see if putting a new battery in mine is all that is wrong. It's a mess around here right now.

About to make the turn towards the wash rack
Good grief! Not a good week for trucks!
My vet bill was close to yours.... $338 I think. That was two visits, but the first call I think he barely charged me for, relatively speaking. I wish I'd have save the invoice but we didn't.
Good news about Rusty's infection.... And I think you explained that the Thyroid management may not go away but at least it can be corrected with a fairly affordable supplement? Are you able to work him again now or are you still waiting? How are his energy levels? Doesn't thyroid trouble also affect that?
When is that happening?
Your riding in the round pen sounded good.... Working you really hard anyhow!
~That's~ the scary wash rack eh? Is it a concrete pad?
Well, I can tell you my Bay would probably snort a bit at that too, but he's an A-rab horse.... I likes to blow at everything!
Wrong way, Okie
I'm not sure when the new trainer starts. The owner has been out sick. Haven't seen the new farrier either. I may have to borrow a trailor and take Okie to McAllen. His feet really need trimming.
The pad is concrete and has some cracks. It in itself no big deal since he doesn't balk anywhere else but he has to do it because I may have to tie him up to something like that in the future and I don't want in problems.
Okie looks pretty relaxed in that picture. Alert, but relaxed. :-)
SUCCESS!
Hey, I got the window to work on my truck, so I went and got my own feed, then got home and switched out the battery myself, and now it is starting like it should, now I won't6 have to worry about it quitting on me somewhere. Mack was on a job way over in Tulsa, and I hated to make him come all the way here without me at least trying to fix it my self. So now I guess I will be able to go see that horse.
When I picked up the feed the guy says he's ready to have his mare come home, So Reba will be leaving next Fri.
When the vet called yesterday with those results I wasn't here and Mack got the info. I'm trying to get hold of her myself now to ask about riding him now/when, and if this is a life time thing with him and his tyroid. I think it is.
Becky
Yeah, he was mellow yesterday. Got a little horsey when he was practicing walking sideways but things went well. I have his long chain on here. I don't like using it but I'm not going to coach him 30 minutes anymore. He is past fear and just in to plain old stuburn. Of course no one around yesterday to see him walk up:')
Well done fixin' the truck!
Will wait for report back from the vet then.... and this horse!

He does like his head low
