The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread

Posted on 04/26/2004 12:06:41 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. We may not ~always~ have a lot of activity, but when we do, it will be fun. I will put a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I will also develop a ping list for horse threads that are of interest. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

I am hoping this thread will be a fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

lol. As bad as I hate to we have decided to put the baby in daycare on the days my son works and my housekeeper/babysitter going to come in later and help us in the evenings so Eddie and I can get away and have some quiet time. Things aren't always this chaotic, Gracias a Dios:') I would have a hard time replacing her. I can't do step two and three if I do step 1. Just a crazy day.

It's unusally cool here today and tomorrow and for an hour I think he'll be fine. It will be less of a work out then he gets running around here on his own:). He seems as if he is feeling really good. I was just really worrying about taking Rocky out with the mare. At the time I agreed to this I was still riding Rusty. Rocky and Harley don't like each other, but Rocky doesn't seem to mind Rusty, especially since there will be no mare around. Rocky's never done anything, but I just didn't want to take the chance if at all possible. I could probably have used that as a good excuse not to do it. But I just want to get it over with.

I bet Rusty would enjoy a little ride. I am surprised and impressed that it is Rocky the kid gets to ride!

Anyone can ride Rocky. He is so good. When she rides him tho she's in the arena by herself. I just don't want to push it, you know. That is one reason I'll never have another stud. You can't ever forget. Because even if something happens that a stud is involved in but it's not his fault he gets the blame. Heather handles him just fine, even when I'm riding the mare. He really doesn't do anything. I just don't want to chance it.

Only one time did I ever see him get studly under saddle and like I say it wasn't his fault. My daughter took him to a team penning at an indoor arena. Her best friend rode a stud too, only that stud was very young and not very mannerly. Well the two girls parked these two next to each other. The young one every once in a while would shake his head at Rocky with his ears penned, or pick up a hind foot and half way swing it in Rock's direction. I told Michelle to pay attention and make him behave, and told Jenny to pay attention. Well they were two 16 year old with HUA syndrome:) Michelle went up to her horse and shook her finger in his face and said "Cinnamon stop that". Well of course he didn't. It went on for about 10 minutes. Then Rock had had enough. BTW, the girls were not on the horses, just holding them by the reins. Rocky suddenly jerked the reins from Jenny, lunged over and grabbed Cinnamon by the withers a literally drove that horse out into the center of all the other riders and down into the ground. Cinnamon was on his knees and Rocky looked about 500 lbs heavier and 10 ft taller. His ears were back, teeth bared. It was an awesome and scary sight. But of course it gave a very bad impression. I was pretty put out with the girls. But you know, that young stud never looked at Rocky again. If they were standing close to each other he would always look away. Kind of funny. It was a good lesson for the girls too. But that was the only time he has ever done anything when under saddle. So I know even he has his limits, and I just didn't want to put him in a situation with a 7 yr old on him.

Wow.... just from your vivid description I can picture that!

And my stallion was real good too... I gave lessons to a pretty little kid on him... I thought mine must be the only one in the whole world that good ;~D

He was a lover though.... he was known to 'hang out' at shows a little too much. ;~D If he was too distracted, I would put Vicks in his nose.

I got an e-mail from that ranch in Austin today though. They are trying to set Eddie and I up for a basic horsemanship and trail riding clinic. They wanted to know if I wanted to go to a roping clinic . Seriously lol. Guess they just spam it to everyone.

I think I'm gonna have to pass lol. I Already did my calf roping:'). My son had one he was raising for 4h. The cow from Hell. Mean. She got loose one day and started running. We all went after her. I caught her resting in the neighbors yard and grabbed her rope. They all started scream "hold her" and of course she started running. All I could do was go with her. I finally got her wrapped around a tree. The guys brought the truck up and "walked" her back. She kicked the side in and all skinned up from the road where she decided to slide awhile. Best if I stick to basic horsemanship:')

I'm not sure how good that young stud would have stayed. They landed up gelding him. But chocawsquaw has a stud that is alot like Rocky. Her daughter rode him when she was younger and CS rides him now at times.

Good studs are out there. I think these guys were all born with a good temprament, but they have also been held to good behavior, and not used a whole lot for breeding. I think studs have gotten the reputation they have because of the way people handle them now a days. Most people have them strictly for breeding, they're not handled and rode.

Rocky was born with a good despostion. He'd been rode here and there by my son but he's too small to do much roping on. When Jenny started riding him she was 13, and I told her you can't ever forget he's a stud. Don't even let him talk to other horses when you ride him. She was always very strict with him. We hauled him around in the trailer with my mare all the time. That's why those stupid no stud rules irritate me. I've seen alot of geldings and mares be a whole lot worse then Rocky has ever been. It's not the horse that's the problem, it's the people riding them.

I've handled a couple of studs that were as different as night and day, and they were brothers. Rocky was mild mannered and as mellow as you could get. He was strong, and slightly agressive when it came to food, but you could find that in a gelding. And, he never talked to the mares. Casey was another story. He was a stud through and through. But we penned them up along side the mares and nothing ever happened.
We had a gelding that would exhibit typical territorial stud behavior when he was penned with his favorite mare, complete with charging and making a huge scene. If anyone ever tried to get near her, they'd better sign a life insurance form first. We could approach him no problem, though.

That is how Harley is. He actually acts more studly then Rocky does. I think he stirs Rocky up then Rocky will gets silly.

I'm going to ride Harley today, the kid will be on Rocky and her mother on Rusty. Rocky is sooooooooooo slow on the trail and Harley walks out faster and Rusty in the middle that I think that is how we will go. Me in front then mom then kid. Rocky has never been aggressive to Rusty. I just don't want Rocky and Harley close to each other. With Rusty in front of him he's always been so slow that he's just stays about 20 ft. back.
